Build A Cake - #canyoutastethedifference

Back in June, when the sun was shining, my boyfriend and I filled the car boot with junk and sold our wares at the local car boot. The pitch next door but one was selling cakes and I gingerly asked whether they catered for people with allergies. Turns out they did and I spent a good ten minutes discussing all things free from.

Build a Cake is a local start up business run by Olivia and James. I met with Olivia the other weekend (at the car boot I had introduced myself to James). They have a son with multiple allergies so fully understand the free from market. They are making "regular" cakes but want to have a side to the business which caters for free from. Currently they sell their cakes at local markets and via word of mouth. Olivia told me they may consider online selling for the future but cupcakes are delicate to post so more research is needed on how they would provide this service.

Olivia didn't have any egg free cakes to hand the day I visited so I had my Boyfriend taste test the one you see pictured above (wheat, gluten, soya, potato & dairy free). He gave it the thumbs up and said he could not tell the difference. The dairy free frosting is made using coconut milk. I taste tested and thought it was delicious, not too sickly sweet just perfect in my opinion.

One of the reasons I started experimenting with Vegan cake recipes is because when I wanted some for a gift, I could not find anyone in my local area offering a free from service. I found half a dozen people making regular cupcakes but not willing to cater for free from. It seems crazy to me but if you don't understand having allergies then perhaps you don't consider branching out.

If you are a busy person or perhaps need to cater for people with allergies for a party or function, then this service from Build A Cake will probably be very useful. Build A Cake are based in Farnham, Surrey. Their website is under construction but you can 'like' them on Facebook (click here) or follow on Twitter (click here).

  1. These guys look great. I used to live in Guildford - they would've been perfect for me then! Will definitely recommend to friends and family still in the area, regardless of whether or not they have allergies or dietary restrictions.

  2. Looks delectable! It's a bummer more shops don't cater to those with allergies. I suppose it's as you say though--if you haven't been there, you don't get it!

    1. I agree shops are missing out usually the bigger stores only offer gluten free & may be dairy free but it's hard to find egg free as well.
