Travel - Honeymoon in Venice, Italy

Sugarpuffish Honeymoon in Venice, Italy
I love Italy and Venice had been on my travel list for quite some time so I was super excited when it fell into place for our Honeymoon. I had read that visiting in the Spring was the best time to go and I would have to agree with that.

We stayed at Avogaria, a 5 bedroom B&B situated down the cutest little street, away from the crowds but within easy reach of the main attractions. Our hotel didn't necessarily have all the extras of a fancy hotel but it was clean and beautifully decorated so I have no complaints. We were fortunate to get a free room upgrade on arrival which was pure luck as we didn't say we were honeymooners.

We visited the sights - Basilica San Marco, Doge's Palace, Piazza San Marco. We took in the views from the famous bridges. We rode the water buses and went out to Lido for a stroll along the beach. My favourite thing to do was simply walk around and get lost in the labyrinth of streets. Sometimes we took a wrong turn and couldn't get across the canal, other times we stumbled upon little cafes and trinket shops. My least favourite part of the trip was wasting 30 euros for the two of us to visit the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. Sorry Peggy but I'm not a fan of your art collection. The free Joseph Klibansky exhibition we stumbled across was far more interesting, we should have known better than to hand over our cash.

I found managing my dietary needs was not a huge challenge as I had learnt a few tricks from visiting Rome. Many places advertised their allergy awareness which is to be expected under the new EU regulations. Marinara Pizza comes without cheese and whilst tomato and garlic might sound a little dull, it's fantastic when made with fresh ingredients. I found dairy free gelato relatively easily. Happy Cow is a website I use on my travels but we lacked internet connection so I did have to wing it on the hunt for gelato. We simply stopped at every shop we saw and I came up trumps three times on the trip. There was a cafe on the corner of Calle del Pestrin (I'm looking at pictures for a street name so I think that is correct!) that advertised in their window Vegan Panini so I had to participate in that. I was given the choice of two sandwiches and I picked artichoke, peppers and broccoli, which sounds odd but it worked for me.

I noticed many signs for gluten free food and a wide selection of products in the supermarket. Italy does appear to be clued up about it so I don't see it being a problem but of course I don't have first hand experience.

As it was our Honeymoon we did splash out 80 euros on a gondola ride but we chose to do this on the small canals. Of course the Grand Canal is amazing but we thought it was too busy for a romantic trip.

If you get the chance to visit Venice then I would take it. I really did fall in love with this city within the first 5 minutes of arriving. I'll end it here and leave you to browse some of our holiday photos.
