Review Sukin Hydrating Body Lotion with Coconut and Pineapple

(NOTE: ingredient correct at publication, please check before purchase as formulations may change)

Long time readers will know I'm a fan of Sukin. I feel like I've mentioned them a million times in the last 12 years. I was recently in need of a new body lotion and purchased the Sukin Hydrating Body Lotion with Coconut & Pineapple.

I'm going through a phase at the moment where I'm choosing lighter lotion over heavy creams and balms. I finding myself getting a bit overheated and my skin feels as if it's sweaty under the weight of some products. It isn't a pleasant sensation so I've held back on some products over the last year.

Sukin hydrating body lotion is light in texture but it feels moisturising. I have naturally dry skin but it's coping just fine with this product. What I love most is the scent. Oh My! I am in love with the tropical, vanilla aroma which isn't overpowering but delightfully delicate.

Lets chat about the ingredients. Unfortunately if you're allergic to sesame seed oil you will need to avoid this one. For those concerned about essential oil allergens you'll find citronellol and geraniol in the ingredient list. Aside from these you will spot aloe, jojoba, rosehip, wheat germ, cocoa, shea, borage and vitamin E.

"Our Coconut & Pineapple Body Lotion refreshes and stimulates the senses, while a nourishing combination of Rosehip, Avocado and Jojoba Oils, along with Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter hydrate and smooth skin. An infusion of Aloe Vera, Nettle, Horsetail and Burdock restores the skin’s moisture barrier and helps to nourish dry skin." (Sukin)

Also I'm loving that Sukin body lotion comes in a 500ml size as lets face there is a lot of surface area to cover. Smaller sizes don't last very long when covering head to toe on an almost daily basis. Current RRP is £14.95 but I bought it for less on special offer. I've now discovered there is a matching scented body wash and I definitely need to buy that at some point in the near future.

I recommend exploring what Sukin has to offer and definitely check out Sukin Hydrating Body Lotion with Coconut & Pineapple.

Review Green People Scent Free Hand and Body Lotion
I'm going through a phase right now preferring body lotions over butters and balm. Saying that I struggle to find vegan body lotions without essential oils or at best without linalool. Long time readers will not be surprised to find me mention Green People again. I've a long history to this brand that stretches over many years. If you're not already in the know, Green People have a Scent Free collection of products that I'm always talking about but I don't think I've given blog space to their hand and body lotion.

I'm sure you're all familiar with the texture and look of a body lotion and this one from Green People is no different to the norm. As you may expect it doesn't feel greasy and hydrates to moisturise the skin. The formulation is packed full of ingredients including Chamomile, Marshmallow, Organic Perilla, Evening Primrose, Olive and Shea butter. You will probably find that a little goes a long way which I think is common for natural skincare. The less is more thing is often true due to concentrated formulas. From top to toe this body lotion feels good on my skin. I have dedicated hand cream in my collection but this works in a pinch, it saves on space when travelling to have a multipurpose product. Personally when using as a hand cream I'd say the packaging is probably a little large for carrying in a handbag so it will likely be something you keep at home.

As I've said before dedicated reliable skincare which is free from perfumes and essential oils can sometimes feel like a mission to find. I honestly can't fault Green People products, perhaps the only very small and silly criticism is never knowing when you're about to run about due to the airless pump packaging. Moral of that story is always have a back up on hand.

Review Lavera Neutral Intensive Cream with Silver
(Gift PR/prices correct at time of publication)

I've been using Lavera products on and off for probably around twenty years. It's a brand which is reliable and affordable. When it comes to my face and body in recent years I have been opting for creams. Oils are great but when my skin is irritated or on the brink of breaking out with eczema, I think it can respond better to lotions and creams.

Lavera has a Neutral range which is fragrance free for sensitive skin. You will have to check individual product labels if you are looking for Vegan skincare as not all are suitable. I chose the Lavera Neutral Micro Silver Intensive Cream, a body cream suitable for those with sensitive and allergy prone skin.

Even though this product is marketed for the body, I've ended up using as a daily face cream and in my opinion it's suitable for both functions. I'm not sure I'm qualified to comment on whether Silver is a crucial ingredient in your skincare but a quick google search will show you the supposed benefits for reducing inflammation and suitability for skin prone to eczema. It's an interesting ingredient which you may wish to explore further.

So here are my thoughts on the Lavera Neutral Micro Silver Intensive Cream. It has a nice balance on texture. I place it somewhere between not feeling too heavy but providing a good level of moisturisation on dry skin. It's an all round simple cream which comforts my skin and can be used under makeup. At under £20 for 75ml I consider that a reasonable price for a face cream but may not be seen this way if using as intended on the body. Lavera does have a Neutral Face Cream but it isn't suitable for Vegans due to beeswax. The next alternative would be the Neutral Facial Fluid but I would associate the word 'fluid' as having a lighter texture and therefore I wonder if it may suit my very dry skin. Perhaps in the future I will give this a try and report back.

Lavera is a German company. Despite an Austrian grandma and a GCSE in German it doesn't get me very far when trying to read the packaging. Beside the disappointment in myself it may be a problem for others. The front of the box is in English but there isn't an English translation elsewhere or on the tube. I can see how this cuts down on costs but it does present a challenge when understanding how the product should be used and explaining all the other wonderful benefits I'm sure they would like you to know about. You can seek out the information online but I don't recall this situation with other Lavera products so that's why it stands out to me on this occasion.

I think that Lavera Neutral Micro Silver Intensive Cream is worth your consideration if you have sensitive skin. Lavera is a huge brand with many products so even if you don't require fragrance free skincare you can easily find other suitable products.

Top 8 Natural, organic and vegan skincare for 2021
(includes items gifted by PR which have previously been featured on this website)

Happy New Year everyone! I thought I would have a look back at 2021 and let you know which products have made a lasting impression.

I'd rarely used hand sanitiser before the pandemic because it can be very unkind to delicate, eczema prone skin due to the high alcohol content and fragrance allergens. Needs must over the past couple of years and I was grateful that one of my favourite budget brands launched a sanitising gel which was free from linalool. Since my initial review back in January you can guess we've been through several bottles of Organii Purifying Hand Gel.

In March it was Silvan Skincare Pure Face Cream that was a hit. I recall a lovely whipped texture with ingredients that are calming on sensitive skin. Finding a decent fragrance free moisturiser has been a mission for many years and this is up there with my favourites.

Since April I've been through several jars of Maison Meunier Skincare Gentle Cleansing Gel Balm. I like this cleanser because it's an balm-oil to milk formulation. It has a beautiful golden syrup like texture which feels great massaged into my delicate skin and can be easily removed with water or damp cloth.

Over the summer Lily & Rabbit added to their product range with a vegan soap bar collection. The Coconut soap has been a pleasure to use and the bar recently came to an end. I've been impressed with how well it lasted and of course how gentle it has been on my skin.

I'd always been a fan of Odylique Repair Lotion but it can back into my life in last year and has been here to stay. I use it top to toe including on my face. Despite the name it's not a watery, runny product and is very much a light but rich cream. I've been using it as a general moisturiser but it is perfect on itchy eczema patches.

I was on a huge cleanser kick in 2021 and the next product to win me over was Adaptology Red Avert Cleanser. I loved the beautiful and unusual blue colouration from Blue Tansy with an aroma that reminded me of candy. As I mentioned balm-oil textures are one of my favourites and this one did not disappoint.

In November I wrote about Nudge Boutique Whipped Body Butter and it has been a joy to use. I've seen a lot of body butters over the years but this one stands out. Not only do I enjoy the coconut aroma but it rarely feels greasy on my skin. I've always had a sensory aversion to heavy products and I think it stems back to years of eczema emollients. It is probably a odd thing to mention but my skin doesn't feel overwhelmed or suffocated by this product.

I rounded off the year with a review of Terre Verdi ThéBianco Camellia Oil. I think it beautifully sums up my love of simplicity. Skincare doesn't have to feel complicated and there is joy to be found in stand alone ingredients.

I don't know about you but I'm already excited to see what I discover in 2022.

Hydrate sensitive skin with Green People Scent Free Hydrating Calming Serum and Odylique Repair Lotion
(Gifted)

When the colder weather arrives I usually reach for the thickest of moisturising creams however this year it has been a little different. I adore luxurious facial creams but recently I've found the unpleasant effect of feeling too clammy and sweaty (I blame the hormones!). Through a little trial and error I discovered light layering suited me better and so far it has been the right decision. Currently my morning facial moisturising routine consists of Green People Scent Free Hydrating Calming Serum and Odylique Repair Lotion.

I'm already a regular user of the Green People Scent Free 24 Hour cream however having recently run out I took the opportunity to try the Scent Free Hydrating Calming Serum. If you don't like facial oils then you might enjoy the texture of this serum. It's runny but feels cooling and lightweight. You don't require too much product and one pump seems sufficient for me. After cleansing my skin I apply the serum allowing time for it to sink in before following with up with other products. This mighty formulation contains Everlasting Flower, Chamomile, Tara Bush, Green Marine Macro Algae, Marshmallow and Aloe Vera, ingredients which are soothing, moisturising and anti-inflammatory. The Green People Scent Free Hydrating Calming Serum feels like to is working well with my skin type. My skin feels lovely and looks happy (by that I mean it feels free from irritations). I don't really ask for much more than that when it comes to moisturising.

I've previously reviewed the Odylique Repair Lotion but if you haven't seen that post I shall give you a quick run down. Repair Lotion is for irritated, itchy skin on the face and body. It's lightweight and soothing, working quickly to calm skin. I am prone to eczema patches so this product is very handy to have in the bathroom cabinet. Even when I don't have irritated skin I still enjoy using Repair Lotion because it's a good staple all-rounder that I can rely on. I can comfortably use on my face knowing that it won't trigger or upset any underlying conditions. Layered on top of the Green People Calming Serum provides me with the type of moisturisation I am searching for. Dryness is kept at bay for the day and I can apply makeup over the top. Perfect as far as I'm concerned.

If you experience delicate skin but don't enjoy heavy creams or oils then consider trying one or both of these products.

review Odylique Repair Lotion
(gifted/unpaid/affiliate links)

We're living through some difficult times and stress is tough on our skin as well as on mental health. I currently have mild eczema patches on my neck, shoulders and back. It can be very upsetting to know you are never truly free of eczema. Whilst I don't experience the extreme breakouts of my childhood it's forever dormant lurking under my skin.

Long time followers know that I'm a fan of Odylique but I don't think I've ever written down my thoughts on the Repair Lotion. If you experience irritated and itchy skin you'll know that what you desire most is skincare that helps to soothe and calm as quickly as possible.

A time-honoured favourite, originally created by Margaret as a moisturiser for her own and her family’s eczema prone skin, and is now recommended by homeopathic doctors.

Odylique Repair Lotion contains chickweed to ease itching, anti-inflammatory chamomile, soothing calendula, aloe juice and hypericum. The formulation is also free from tree nut oils, wheat, soy and dairy making it suitable for people with common allergies.

Remember that mini heatwave we had? Well I was thankful to have rediscovered Odylique Repair Lotion. I personally find many of the balms and creams marketed for eczema prone skin are too heavy in extreme temperatures. Repair Lotion is different because it's lightweight with a silky texture. Not only does it moisturise but it disappears quickly and doesn't exasperate sweaty skin. It's suitable for use across face and body so no need for additional products. I've had those moments when I've wanted to scratch my skin off but Repair Lotion has honestly been a life saver at soothing my irritated skin.

It is suggested that Odylique Repair Lotion can be apply to affected areas 3-4 times daily. I have done this but I'll also use liberally across my body even when my skin isn't irritated. I find it particularly nice applied after shaving my legs. To maintain the hydration of very dry skin the recommendation is to follow with frequent applications of Ultra Rich Balm.

Of course everyone is different and there are no guarantees but if you experience irritated or eczema prone and allergic skin then maybe try Odylique Repair Lotion. As with all new skincare products remember to patch test first just in case it doesn't suit you.

You can get 20% off an order with Odylique using the code SUGARPUFFISH

eview Nature's Kitchen Summer Skin Box, PoaPoa Soap Dish, Skinlove Shower Gel
(gifted)

It's a mix bunch this month so lets jump straight in and tell you about these 'new to me' products that I've been testing.

Nature's Kitchen Go Glow Summer Skin Box
This gift set contains Summer Skin Cooling Spray and Summer Skin After Sun Lotion, both are fragrance free. Aloe Vera is the key ingredient to both products and I can say that during the recent heatwave the Cooling Spray was a delightful addition to warm days. The After Sun Lotion has a pleasant texture which feels hydrating on skin but doesn't feel sticky, an important factor for me in the high temperatures. The presentation box is a nice touch for gifting. It works well general sun exposure and if we ever get to go on Summer Holidays again I can see this as a nice addition for the beach or pool.

PoaPoa Coconut Soap Holder
A soap dish upcycled from coconut shells and handmade by skilled artisans in Ghana. Poa Poa use coconut oil in their soaps so these dishes use up leftover shells after extraction of ingredients. A unique soap dish that serves it's purpose and gives back. It has draining slots in the base so you will find yourself having to wipe over your sink from day to day. Stylish and eco-friendly, what more could you ask for.

Skinlove Invigorating Shower Gel Grapefruit, Lime & Ginger
A pleasant body wash that produces a soft creamy lather but for me it lacks the promise of an invigorating scent as I find the fragrance mild. I chose this shower gel because it doesn't list linalool in the ingredients (one of my allergies!). It doesn't feel drying or stripping of moisture, an important point for me having eczema prone skin. Performance is as you would expect from this type of product it's just the scent which has let me down.

Annwyn Botanicals Hydrating Hand & Body Lotion with A Hint of Patchouli, Natural Body & Hand Wash with a Hint of Patchouli, Exfoliating Cleanser with Papaya, Soft Citrus & Herb, Sensitive Skin Moisturising Cream Fragrance Free
(gifted PR)

I've been introduced to Annwyn Botanicals through the Free From Skincare Awards 2020. Annwyn have picked up two medals - Gold in Face Care Wash Off for the Exfoliating Cleanser with Papaya, Soft Citrus & Herb and Bronze in Body Care Leave On for the Sensitive Skin Moisturising Cream Fragrance Free. Tester feedback was very complimentary for both products.

Lets me fill you in on a little background information for this natural skincare brand. Annwyn Botanicals give consideration to the environment when it comes to their packaging and ingredients. Products are lovingly handmade and inspired by the North York Moors. Where possible they responsibly source local herbs and essential oils and also use Fairly Traded Women’s Cooperatives from around the world. Many of their products are suitable for Vegans. Packing is recyclable amber glass and sustainably produced biopolymer bottles. I was kindly sent Hydrating Hand & Body Lotion with A Hint of Patchouli, Natural Body & Hand Wash with a Hint of Patchouli, Exfoliating Cleanser with Papaya, Soft Citrus & Herb but the stand out product for me is the Sensitive Skin Moisturising Cream (Fragrance Free).

Dr Botanicals Cocoa & Coconut Superfood Hydrating Body Lotion and Lavera Berry Care & Gentle Care Hand Wash
(Gifted)

I hope you well and coping through current world events? There have been plenty of ups and downs for me and I'm finding blogging a welcomed distraction. As I now have plenty of time on my hands, I am able to explore new products and build relationships with brands so I hope you will join me in this latest review.

Dr Botanicals Cocoa & Coconut Superfood Hydrating Body Lotion
Lets start with whats important to me. This body lotion is suitable for Vegans and does not contain fragrance allergens making it a good all-rounder for a variety of skin types including sensitive skin. It's key ingredients are Coco Butter and Coconut oil both of which work to hydrate, smooth and restore. For me this is a light cream which works well in the summer weather as it disappears quickly without feeling sticky or greasy. As someone with very dry skin when applied in the morning it will last through to the evening but visible flaky skin does return so I need to reapply regularly. This isn't a major negative just something to keep in mind and I almost come to expect this from a of a body lotion as I'm prone to eczema my skin barrier is weakened. I was hoping for a rich coconut and cocoa scent but it's not there, now it might just be my hayfever stricken senses however the neutral aroma is pleasant and doesn't clash with other skincare products. Over the years I've tried a handful of Dr Botanicals products, each one has it's own merits but I've never been won over enough to repurchase. This body lotion wouldn't get me through the winter months as I'd need to layer with oils but it's great for warm sunny days. I recommend Dr Botanicals Cocoa & Coconut Superfood Hydrating Body Lotion if you enjoy a simple skincare routine without overpowering fragrances.

For obvious reasons we are getting through hand soap like it's going out of fashion. It's important to me that our soap is free from ingredients that may strip the skin of moisture. Pre-existing dry skin and eczema have been tricky to manage as the stresses of extra hand washing takes its toll. Lavera has been around for 25 years so they are one of the first pioneers into the world of natural and organic skincare and makeup. I've never been disappointed in their products and they offer affordability for the entire family with an extensive range of products. The liquid hand washes are new and suitable for Vegans, they are available in 250ml pump bottle or 500ml at home refill which is a great option and allows you to reuse packaging. Basis Sensitive Gentle Care Hand Wash is extra mild and caring (it replaces the Lavera Basis Sensitive Liquid Soap), Berry Care Fruity Hand Wash has a fruity fresh fragrance and Lime Care Hand Wash is for citrus lovers. I've been very happy with the performance of these liquid hand washes. I would have preferred if the Gentle Care hand wash was formulated without fragrance allergens but these are in my home for my husband and any future guests to use. Lavera is always my recommendation for any budget conscious consumers.

Reviews Alba Botanicals, Balmonds, Giovanni, Madara, Raw Halo, Viridian
(I have purchased these products but they may have previously featured on my site as gifts/press samples)

During lockdown a handful of products ran out so I've been ordering replacements and I thought you might be interested in discovering more about my favourites. I hope this shows that my positive reviews are honest and demonstrates how products become staples in my self care routine.

Alba Botanica Very Emollient Cream Shave - this was something I originally picked up at TK Maxx and I wasn't expecting much however it turned out to be the perfect product for me. I've always experienced dry skin and shaving can be a struggle especially in the winter months. My legs are prone to soreness and bleeding despite the upmost care and attention paid to my skin. When it came to repurchasing the coconut lime was out of stock so I selected mango vanilla instead. I spent years finding the perfect shave cream so I truly hope I can continue to source this one as it leaves my skin silky smooth and undamaged by the razor.

Balmonds Daily Moisturising Cream - this cream tackles my dry skin with ease and it's suitable for across the entire body including my face and hands. This is a reliable product and appeals to me from a budget conscious perspective as it can cut three creams down to just one. It's suitable for all the family and when the shops are open again readily available on the high street at Holland & Barrett.

Giovanni 2chic Ultra-Moist Dual Action Protective Leave-In Spray - this product has been working well for me so I'm sticking with it for the moment. Unlike other leave in sprays this doesn't make my hair feel greasy or weigh down in. It doesn't appear to 'build up' over time which is great as it doesn't conflict with my hair washing routine.

Madara Hyaluronic Anti-Pollution CC Cream SPF15 - I've been using this since circa 2018 and it has now replaced my long time love affair with Madara Moon Flower Tinting Fluid. Both products are excellent but it was the SPF that clinched it for me in the end. This is the only non-vegan (contains beeswax) product in my routine and if that's a deal beaker for you then opt for the Tinting Fluid which is suitable for vegans. Depending on how my skin looks I'll often wear Madara CC cream over moisturiser or layer it under a powder mineral foundation, either way I like how it evens out my skin tone.

Raw Halo Organic Raw Chocolate - you came here for skincare and here I am throwing in a food item but it's one of my lockdown essentials. Chocolate that is suitable for Vegans but without trace warnings for milk is really hard to find but Raw Halo ticks that box and tastes delicious so I treated myself to several bars.

Viridian High Five Multivitamin and Mineral Formula - I originally introduced readers to Viridian in 2015 (Viridian Essential Female Multi Vitamin). Supplements are very much personal choice and should be tailored to individual needs. I take vitamins on the advice provided when seen in Allergy Clinics (NHS). A balanced diet is always preferable and I do my best where I can. The High Five formula offers me everything I need in one tablet and I've been taking them for a few years. I chose Viridian over other brands because of their ethics and quality of ingredients.

review Organii SPF 50 Sun Milk and After Sun Cream
(Gifted PR)

It's important to use SPF when enjoying the sunshine whether you are at the beach, in your garden or on a walk. I often mention Organii products because I repeat purchase and think they offer good value for money. The liquid soaps and shower gels are essentials in my household but did you know they also have a range of suncreams? This includes SPF 20 Sun Milk, SPF 30 Sun Cream, SPF 15 Facial Sun Cream, SPF 50 Sun Milk and After Sun Cream.

Organii kindly sent me SPF 50 Sun Milk and After Sun Cream just in time for the glorious sunshine we had Easter weekend. Organii SPF 50 Sun Milk protects against UVA & UVB with a formulation containing Non-nano Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. The ingredients are skin nourishing and moisturising with extracts of organic Calendula, Mallow Leaf, Argan, Jojoba, Sunflower, Olive Fruit, Linseed, Rice Bran, Karanja oils to protect while keeping skin soft and supple. Chamomile works as a anti-inflammatory and Vitamin E defends the skin against radicals.

Organii SPF 50 Sun Milk and After Sun Cream are both fragrance free (no essential oil allergens). SPF 50 is going to be the one you'll use on the whole family (babies, children and adults) as it's suitable for delicate skin. Sun Milk does imply a fluid consistency which I would agree with and this was a pleasant surprised because from personal experience natural sun cream can often be thick and gloppy. It was my preference to apply SPF 50 Sun Milk on my body because I didn't like the feeling on my face. I am extremely fussy about texture and it wasn't right for me. On my arms and legs I thought it was quite good at not leaving whiteness but felt a little tacky at the end of the day however this is not an uncommon sensation with sun cream. I'm not sure why but I felt this product applied differently on my face and left a whiteness to my skin but I didn't think the same of my legs and arms. I have a medium fair skin tone so this might be something to be mindful of if you have a darker complexion. You may be able to combat this by mixing in some foundation before application.

When it comes to the Organii After Sun Cream it's the perfect follow up product but suitable for daily use for moisturising and soothing your skin. It's formulated with some lovely ingredients - shea butter, argan oil, aloe vera, calendula and Vitamin E. It's a lovely light lotion, which applies easily but also fragrance free. I struggle to find scent free body creams and after sun so I'm very pleased to be able to recommend this one. It's a very pleasant lotion, ideal for use during warmer weather regardless of whether you've been out in the sun.

Let me know on social media if you have tried Organii suncream and whether you enjoy using these products.

Review Fragrance Free from Balm Balm, Ermana, Myroo
(Note: I participate in the Love Lula Blogger Programme and can select products from their site, I am not obligated to review)

If you delve into my archives you'll find a review for Balm Balm Super Light Coconut Cleanser written in 2012. This is a product I have recommended time and time again over the years. It's one I trust but I wanted to re-visit the product to bring awareness that Balm Balm recently overhauled their packaging from plastic to glass. The new bottle is not only better for the environment but usage is easier since it now comes with a pump/spray top. I know coconut oil isn't everyone's favourite ingredient but I love it and have no issues. This cleanser lives up to the name "super light" and Balm Balm achieves this by using fractionated coconut oil. If you have sensitive or allergy prone skin then Balm Balm Super Light Coconut Cleanser is worth consideration. It's a one ingredient product; simply coconut, nothing else added.

I don’t know about you but finding a good scent free body lotion has been a little tricky over the years so that’s where Ermana Soothe Organic Hand & Body Lotion steps in. The formulation contains the hydrating ingredients of shea butter and cocoa butter, it easily massages and absorbs into skin but it doesn’t feel heavy or sticky. This is definitely a good all rounder for the whole family. Since receiving this product Ermana have made the switch to amber glass apothecary bottle with black pump.

I've been banging on about Myroo for years and I'm really enjoy seeing this brand grow and expand. Myroo is perfect for all but especially those with sensitive skin as they offer fragrance free options of their products. Recently they added body oil to the range so I knew the Rosehip Body Oil was something I wanted to try. Body oils are great all year round but for me they come into their own in Winter. My skin is prone to flakiness as soon as the heating comes on and there is a chill in the air. I'm a Summer baby and Winter can make me feel miserable about my skin, I’m far more prone to eczema breakouts. Myroo Rosehip Body Oil is a blend of safflower, jojoba, rosehip and rosemary. I’d describe the oil as light in texture because it doesn’t feel thick or heavy on application and it moisturises fairly quickly without too much greasiness. It’s an excellent all rounder for across the body. I find that the majority of body products are heavy on essential oils so it’s lovely to find a fragrance free alternative. If you enjoy fragrance then opt for Myroo OM Oil Vetivert & Marjoram instead.

Interview with Bare Faced Skin - Luxurious, Effective Skincare
I had the pleasure of discovering Bare Faced Skin through the Free From Skincare Awards and I invited Helen, the founder, to interview. Keep reading to learn more about this up and coming natural skincare brand.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to start your own company
I’ll tell the short version as this could turn into a novel. I’ve always been a lover nature, essential oils and have background in body therapies. I came into skincare some might say by accident. I think looking back I don’t think it was an accident. I developed Eczema at the age of 17 which started at my forehead and worked its way down to cover my body. I spent many years using prescribed steroid creams and lashings of petroleum jelly to slather all over my body, so masking a problem. I had numerous allergy tests which at the time showed I was allergic to the 20th century. I ended up in hospital with complications due to compromised skin and once I left hospital and after a time convalescing at home I came to the conclusion I had to do something. So began my overhaul, looking at the body and mind holistically inside and out.

Guest Post Conscious Skincare 'Pure' - a collection of Fragrance Free products
Please note this is a guest post written by Conscious Skincare, this is not a sponsored post

Hello, I’m Rebecca Martin, founder of Conscious Skincare, a multi-award-winning organic skincare and body care company, based on the gorgeous west Wales coastline.

Like many of you, I live with a couple of health issues, asthma and an under-active thyroid, which mean I have to be careful about what I put on my skin and what I expose myself to. In fact, it was a severe allergic reaction that my husband experienced that kick-started Conscious Skincare in the first place. My husband got some wood stain on his skin and didn’t realise. It got into his system and he became very ill and hypo-allergenic to just about everything so I scrambled around, going through all my notes to come up with products he could use safely. It was a very scary time in our lives.

Day to day, an under-active thyroid means very dry skin, random pains for no reason at all, fatigue, anxiety and intense feelings of being ‘overwhelmed’. I have learned over the years to manage the anxiety with yoga, exercise, breathing and meditation but this anxious state means higher levels of cortisol in my body which can lead to burn out and worse still, organ damage so keeping an eye on how stressed I’m feeling is key!

With my thyroid, I can manage and control how I respond; avoiding stressful situations, a good diet and taking good care of myself. My asthma however, is a different beast! It started after a whooping cough vaccination when I was 6. The main trigger is smell which is usually completely out of my control! It was terrible when I used to commute on the tube in London; body odour, stale air and my biggest nightmare, other people’s synthetic perfumes and after-shaves.

Shopping was like running the gauntlet. Have you noticed how department stores force you to walk through a chemical mist as you enter the store? The cosmetic counters are right by the main entrances. These chemically laden mists are full of allergens and known toxins and you walk straight into it! It kills me every time and I have to cover my face, close my eyes and literally run through it. There couldn’t be more asthma and allergy triggers in one place if you tried. It’s alarming that many high end designer brands of perfume and after-shave still routinely contain known carcinogens and allergens. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics run by the Environmental Working Group in the U.S listed 38 secret chemicals in 17 top brand perfume brands. The average fragrance contained 14 chemicals that were not even listed on the label. Amongst the chemicals found were those associated with hormone disruption and allergic reactions. Even more worrying was that many of the substances found had not been assessed for safety in cosmetic products. There couldn’t be a stronger argument for ditching perfumes and after-shaves!

When I started Conscious Skincare, ‘parfum’ would never have a place in our products. We only use high quality pure essential oils and we only use them for the benefits they bring to your skin, not for fragrance. We have launched a specific range which is free from any essential oils called ‘Pure’. Perfect for those of you who, like me, your allergy triggers are smells too!

Ingredient Review Mixa body care for sensitive skin
I'm seeing many rave reviews for Mixa body lotions so I thought I would take a closer look at the ingredients.  Mixa list all their ingredients online so nothing to hide and I've used their website as my point of reference.

The tag line "Created in a French pharmacy in 1924. Inspired by traditional apothecary ingredients" is an interesting one when looking at the formulations. For me the word "apothecary" inspires imagery of herbal treatments and Mixa is far from that. The "Our Ingredients" page doesn't give the full picture, it simply lists the "nice" ingredients - allantoin, cold cream, coriander oil, oat milk, panthenol, urea and vitamin E.

Dig a little deeper and you'll find full ingredients listed on individual products. Straight away I can see why this is an affordable brand as the top ingredients across the range are water, paraffin, propylene glycol, dimethicone. There are few natural ingredients - shea butter, oat milk, sunflower seed oil. Dimethicone and mineral oils coat the skin, providing the slip and silky feeling but they offer no healing benefits. Your dry skin will be banished whilst using these lotions but once you stop the problem returns because you are not treating the underlying condition.

I noticed the phrase "Dermatologically tested skincare for dry and sensitive skin" and if you didn't know already it holds very little value.  It simply means that the product was reviewed by a dermatologist and like the term "hypoallergenic" it is not regulated. It certainly doesn't guarantee it will suit your skin.

I appreciate cost is an important factor and some people won't look to natural and organic skincare because they make an assumption about price. However there are affordable natural brands as mentioned in my article Natural and Organic Skincare if you are on a budget - under £10. If you experience sensitive and dry skin then shea butter or carrier oils can be an effective and inexpensive option. Look out for independent brands who are not spending money on marketing and fancy packaging so can keep their costs down. The RRP on Mixa body lotions is £6.49 and brands like Jason (£7.49), Organic Surge (£7.95), Sukin (£9.95) and Handmade Naturals (£7.95) cost a little extra but you'll probably use less product in the long run.

My intention with this article is to highlight that it can be worthwhile paying attention to ingredients. Of course I champion natural products because I believe they offer alternative benefits. For many years I suffered terribly with dry and flaky skin and there was a noticeable difference when I switched to green beauty.

Review Green People Neutral Light Day Moisturiser and Neutral Scent Free Hand & Body Lotion
(Gifted PR Samples)

The winter months take their toll on our skin, I’ve been breaking out with eczema and my skin is visibly dry. Green People kindly sent me a duo of products to tackle my winter issues as part of their February Fixer campaign. I received the Neutral Light Day Moisturiser and Neutral Scent Free Hand & Body Lotion. I’ve recommend the Neutral Scent Free range on more than one occasion over the years. It’s ideal for anyone with sensitive skin especially those who need to avoid perfumes and essential oils.

Favourite Fragrance Free Natural and Organic Skincare for Sensitive Skin
I thought I would write a round up article of all the fragrance free/unscented products which I love to use. When I talk about fragrance free I’m referring to formulations which do not contain artificial fragrance or natural scents from essential oils. Why do I choose this type of product? For me, it lowers the risk of skin reactions and in 2015 I was diagnosed with sensitivity to linalool (which occurs naturally in some essential oils).

Cleansers
My absolute favourite unscented cleanser has to be Handmade Naturals cleansing oil. It’s a delicious blend of Japanese Camellia, Rice Bran, Coconut oil and Monoi de Tahiti oil. I would also recommend Mallow & White Soothe Unfragranced Cleansing Oil, Siskyn Hot Cloth Cleansing Oil and Rossi Uvema Rice Bran & Borage Seed Face Cleansing Oil. If you prefer balms then look at Alucia or Harbour Elements. I’ve tried a number of fragrance free cleansing creams over the years but nothing has left a lasting impression. Regular readers know that I love Odylique Creamy Coconut because it’s free from linalool but it does contain limonene (from lemon oil).

Moisturisers/Facial Oils
One ingredient oils such as Rosehip or Baobab are easily found but I have two hero products, Odylique Superfruit Concentrate and Skin & Tonic Naked Beauty Oil. It’s the blend of ingredients which I enjoy most and they both work beautifully on my skin. Alternatives to try are Lyonsleaf Unscented Marshmallow Soften & Rejuvenate Facial Oil, Silvan Skincare Skin Therapy Extra Gentle Face oil or Myroo Skin Boost Facial Serum (available Fragrance Free). If you prefer a traditional moisturiser then I like Trilogy Very Gentle Moisturising Cream. I’ve not found other fragrance free creams that I enjoy as much. I highly recommend Evolve Organic Beauty Daily Renew and Antipodes Rejoice, they are linalool free but technically not fragrance free as scented with vanilla.

Haircare
You all know exactly what I’m going to mention.....yes it’s my beloved Odylique Gentle Herb Shampoo. My favourite conditioner isn’t fragrance free but I can point you towards John Masters Organics Bare products and Green People has scent free shampoo & conditioner. I’m not sure if fragrance free styling products exist as I currently use scented products.

Bodycare
I use plenty of plain shea body butters and they are widely available but I don't favour a particular brand over another. I think the nicest unscented body oil and cream I have used to date is the Ermana Soothe Mama Oil and John Masters Organic Bare Body Lotion. Both products perform well and keep my skin hydrated. I recently discovered Trilogy Pure Plant Body Oil. In the shower I like to use John Masters Organic Bare Body Wash but alternatives to try are Green People Scent Free, Desert Essence Fragrance Free or Odylique Aloe Vera body wash.

Do you have a favourite unscented skincare product? Have you tried any of the ones I've mentioned?

Reviews Natural Skincare Love Lula Trilogy Acure Madara
(Disclaimer - affiliate link & I'm part of the Love Lula Blogger Programme and can select PR samples each month, I am not obligated to review and all opinions are my own)

In July I scaled back my choices from Love Lula because I was taking time out to recover from surgery and wanted to ease my blogging workload. Let me talk you through what I have been using.

Acure Organics Sensitive Facial Cleanser
Acure’s hair care range is a cult product among US bloggers and now we have the chance to try products through a UK stockist. As I’m happy with my hair routine, I thought I’d try Acure skincare and I always feel that a cleanser is a good place for me to start. The Acure sensitive facial cleanser has a silky thick texture which is excellent for massaging across the face. I find it works better on damp skin so I hold a wet flannel to my skin before applying (I hate splashing water). It can be rinsed off but I choose to use a damp flannel. The aroma is pleasant and I’m pretty sure my skin likes this product because it currently feels nice and soft with no visible signs of irritation. It’s fair to say I’m enjoying using this Acure cleanser. I’m happy to recommend and would re-purchase.

Ere Perez, John Masters Organics, Odylique
(Gifted/Unpaid/Affiliate Link)

John Masters Organics Bare Unscented Body Lotion
After buying the Bare detangler conditioner in TK Maxx, I was curious to try more from the range. This lotion has a light texture, I usually go for something a little heavier but I’m really enjoying changing things up. I find my skin absorbs the product very quickly making application easy and fuss free. It's perfect for lazy days when you don’t have patience for rubbing in heavy balms.

I picked this because it does not contain essential oils plus I was getting a little tired of ordering my Desert Essence body wash from the US. You all know I’m a massive fan of Odylique (no they don’t sponsor me!) it's genuine appreciation of their products. There isn’t much to be said about body washes but this gives creamy foam and feels good on my delicate skin. I can see myself buying a new bottle once this one is used up.

When I order this I had a massive pimple on my chin so it was a good opportunity to give this serum a try. I must say its unusual for me to get spots but the spot on serum is an all-rounder suitable for those little medical emergencies like cuts and bites. I picked up the 20ml size which is perfect if you simply don’t need this product on a regular basis. Spot on Serum has a medicinal scent which I associate with tea tree and lavender. A little goes a long way and it packs a punch as it helps reduce pain and inflammation, it doesn’t clear a pimple overnight but it aids with the healing process in the long run. Great product and one I'm happy to recommend.

You’d be mistaken if you thought this was a lipstick as it leans more towards a tinted lip balm. The colour pay off is a sheer tint and I find it nourishing. Perfect for lazy days when you want a little pick me up but you don’t want to spend time on makeup. The colour is similar to my own skin tone you might not notice I’m wearing it but that's ok as I still see a difference. I also love the fact that the Lipbar is suitable for Vegans. I'm definitely tempted to try other colours.

Have you tried any of these products? What are your thoughts on them?
