Green Beauty Brands that stood the test of time: A look back at 2011 Blog Posts

As 2022 draws to a close I thought it might be interesting to look back on my first year of blogging. It all began in May 2011 and I was curious to see how many of those early posts had stood the test of time. Sadly there a several brands that no longer exist but there are some products that remain staples in my home.

Whilst the Faith In Nature Cacao Body Wash has long since disappeared I'm still using their products. Currently in my collection I have the Jojoba and Avocado body washes and Dragonfruit hand wash. I've always found Faith in Nature to be a reasonably priced brand and these days you can find on the high street and local refill stores. I had paired up my original body wash review with a post about Nakd raw fruit & nut bars. I'm still a loyal customer and eat them on a daily basis. Current favourite flavours are Bakewell and Peanut.

I don't use Dr Bronner's as often as I once did but you'll still find it in my home as it's the best liquid soap to use for washing out makeup brushes. Over the years I found it a little too drying on my skin so for me, its main purpose is now household cleaning.

I'm still using Naturtint Hazelnut Blonde hair colourant but honestly I'm now contemplating whether it's time to ditch it and embrace the grey; only time will tell.

I can safely say that I'm still bitter that Alpro still haven't launched the Macchiato drink which I had on my trip to Amsterdam.

Konjac Sponges have remained in my life but I now only use the body sponges. Over the years I tried out several brands but we (my husband and I) are currently re-purchasing from Friendly Soap.

I'm still sadden to this day at the loss of Brownearth body butters. They were a favourite for a long time. You can of course find lots of decent green brands offering different variations of shea body butters either with this standalone ingredient or combining with others such as coconut or cocoa butter.

I'm can't quite believe that I first discovered Evolve Organic Beauty back in 2011. I remember the branding was very different back in the day. Evolve is definitely one of those brands that I revisit over and over again, dipping into products as the range has expanded. Currently I'm trying out the Bio-Retinol + C Booster and I've placed an order for the Bio-Retinol Gold Mask in the Boxing Day sales!

I remember using Organic Surge shower gels regularly back in the early years. I thought they were lost forever but recently discovered they re-branded to Organic Works (OW).

Oh my the photo on this post about TK Maxx is terrible but I wanted to say that I still visit stores looking for beauty bargains.

In my first month of blogging I wrote about my struggles with sun cream that was suitable for eczema prone skin. I just wanted to say that through many trials I eventually settled on Green People. This is a brand I had been using long before the blog started. It is very much a staple to this day. I am a fan of their scent free moisturisers and of course facial sun cream.

I hope that you have enjoyed this look back over 2011 and comparing it with 2022. At this time I'm not sure whether I'll continue blogging into 2023 but you can always find me over on social media if you'd like to connect.

Happy New Year to you all!

Review MSA Skincare Apricot and Banana Face Mask
(Gifted)

Making Skin Amazing Skincare (MSA) was started in 2019 by Suprina following a change in circumstances which affected Suprina's wellbeing and skin. MSA is a product range that is founded on passion and a commitment to protecting the planet through natural, organic, vegan and plastic free skincare.

MSA use essential oils in their formulations which means a few products were out of my scope for testing. However I was kindly sent the Apricot and Banana Face Mask because it is made without essential oils, therefore no allergens for me to worry about.

Face masks are fun products to use. Their suitability for all ages and skin types makes them attractive to consumers. If you enjoy self-care and wellbeing then masks can easily be slotted into your routine. They can be enjoyed in the bath, while reading a book or watching TV. You may find that they improve your complexion by leaving dull skin looking brighter.

The Apricot and Banana Face Mask is clay based (French pink clay and Kaolin) with banana and apricot for their nurturing, smoothing and moisturising properties. It also contains coconut milk and mango powder. As this is a powdered mask you will need to add water or another liquid to mix it into a paste. You'll then be able to apply to your face, sit back and relax for 8-10 minutes before rinsing off. As I have naturally dry skin I don't allow the mask to harden completely and prevent this from happening by adding a facial oil to the mixture. This allows me to remove the mask without having to drag a flannel over my skin and prevents prolonged redness or inflammation.

It's been a pleasure to try out this MSA face mask and I would happily recommend to people. If you'd like to purchase MSA Apricot and Banana Face Mask or view other products in the range, please visit their website.

12 Christmas Gift Ideas including sustainable stocking fillers and secret Santa gifts
(Unpaid/previously gifted items included/from Press Release or my own research)

Butterwhips Christmas Gift Set (Purple)
A duo of balms to help you relax and unwind. Warmly Relaxing is aromatic with bergamot and lavender to relax the body and Planted Feet contains peppermint and black spruce to ease tired feet and soften skin.

3 x Caroboo bars packaged in a bright cracker cardboard case. A treat for all but especially those with dietary requirements as these carob bars are gluten free, dairy free and vegan.

A luxury brand with results driven skincare using ethically sourced and organic ingredients. The recyclable Miron glass packaging looks beautiful but also protects the integrity of the ingredients. The range consists of two facial oils, an eye elixir, powder-to-foam cleanser and a facial steam. I personally can recommend the Soothe Facial Elixir as I've tested it for myself, it has been formulated for dry, sensitive and inflamed skin.

A new conditioner bar to complement the fragrance free shampoo bar, The Sensitive One. It can be purchased full size, as part of a gift set (with the shampoo bar) or discovery size (30g - great for a stocking filler). Kind2 bars are vegan, plastic free, palm free, UK made and they plant a tree with every order.

Nourish have launched a beautiful new collection of gift sets. I have choosen to mention The Antioxidant Duo caught. This set contains Antioxidant Multi-Tasking Super Balm a cleanser, mask and intensive moisturiser and Antioxidant Peptide Mist, a make-up primer, hydrating skin protector and night-time soothing skin repair boost. Products are presented in a reusable fair trade organic cotton bag from Freeset.

As a skincare enthusiast with sensitivity to perfumes I'm often told I'm tricky to buy for, well not any more, it seems people forget that Fragrance Free is always an alternative option. This Body Care gift contains Fragrance Free Body Butter and 2 x 65g Oatmeal Handcrafted Soap slices

An adorable stocking filler and plastic free alternative to Kinder Surprise. Each box contains organic chocolate (which is vegan, dairy, nut and gluten free) plus a 3D puzzle and fun facts card to play with, learn with and collect. You can also purchase their chocolate separately if buying for older children and adults. I'm happy to recommend as I had a free sample at a Vegan Fair, the 'milk' chocolate is delicious and creamy.

A range of gift sets are available from Pure Thoughts. I've picked out the Peaceful Moments Gift Box which comprises of a Peace Meditation Candle, Lavender & Lemon Natural Handmade Soap and Lavender & Sweet Orange Mineral Bath Soak. This set offers a calming blend of essential oils to help soothe a tired mind and body.

The range includes Bamboo Cutlery Set, Bamboo Straw Set and Bamboo Toothbrush. The cutlery and straw sets come with cotton carry pouches available in 8 designs. A total of 20p from every purchase is donated to 100 Tons of Plastic, a charity aiming to remove plastic waste from shores and seas while raising awareness about plastic pollution globally. Bamboo products are BPA-Free, sustainable, biodegradable, recyclable and compostable. A perfect gift for anyone interested in living a sustainable lifestyle.

Formulated with gentle hydrosols rather than essential oils which makes Seilich more suitable for sensitive skin. Over 80% of the ingredients are grown in their wildflower meadow in Scotland, in addition to having Wildlife Friendly Certification. Several gift options are available and I've selected the Treatment Set containing three products which work together - a meadow face mask, meadow face oil and a seasonal hydrosol.

A present that fits through the letterbox is ideal for long distance gifting. The Self Care set contains Bath Salts in a kraft pouch enough for 2-3 baths, lip butter, fragrant wax melts, a Pukka tea bag and Green and Black Dark Chocolate

A discovery I made this year was the Bright Spark Enzyme Oil and it made a long lasting impression. It's a lightweight facial serum to help soothe and balance skin. A brilliant element to Wildefruit formulations is they use upcycled ingredients. This oil includes papaya, strawberry and blackcurrant seeds from jam and juice production that would otherwise go to waste.

Pumpkin skincare for glowing skin
(not sponsored collated from research)

Pumpkin season is upon us and if you don't fancy carving them up for Halloween consider looking out for this ingredient in your skincare. The nutrients in pumpkin are mighty. It's full of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids (omegas) and zinc which are ideal for dry, mature and damaged skin. If this sounds like an ingredient you need, then here is a little selection of products with pumpkin in their formulations-

Angela Langford Skincare A Little Lift - this plumping and firming serum contains electric daisies, frankincense, pumpkin seed, argan and hyaluronic acid to nourish, refine and hydrate skin.

Awake Organics Frankincense Brightening Serum - this is said to target fine lines and discolouration because it's contains Vitamins A, C and E found in Sea Buckthorn, Carrot Seed, Rosehip and Pumpkin.

By Sarah London Hero Facial Oil - a nourishing formulation which includes Sweet Almond Oil, Apricot Oil and Pumpkin Seed Oil that can be used day or night, all year round. It's also free from fragrance and essential oils so for me that makes it perfect for sensitive skin.

BYBI Acid Gold AHA Resurfacing Face Mask - an exfoliating face mask packed with natural AHAs to banish dulling, dead skin cells. The pumpkin enzyme in this mask derives from pumpkin flesh, a by-product of the pumpkin seed industry and usually gets thrown away.

Nourish Radiance Firming Facial Oil - formulated with omega-rich oils to lift, firm and hydrate the skin. Improves elasticity and reduces fine lines. It includes pumpkin seed for toning and protecting the skin.

Pai Pomegranate & Pumpkin Seed 2-Step Stretch Mark Oil A fragrance free stretch mark oil and cream duo to support you through pregnancy and beyond.

Skin & Tonic Inner Glow Face Oil - packed with vitamin C, alongside rosehip oils to rejuvenate your skin and pumpkin seed oil for skin-loving vitamin E and nourishing omega oils.

Fiini Naturally Oat and Bilberry Powder Face Mask
(Gifted)

I discovered Fiini Naturally through the Free From Skincare Awards having entered several products over the past couple of years. Fiini was founded by two friends, Heidi and Essi, they developed their own skincare taking inspiration from natural raw ingredients in their homeland of Finland. They have an understanding of sensitive skin and several of their products are fragrance free. As the brand is based in Finland this plays an important role with nature and the environment having a strong influence. It's not just a cosmetic range, they also make household cleaning supplies. Fiini's ethos is proudly Finnish with honesty, naturalness, purity, ecology and animal welfare at the heart of the business.

I tend to shy away from face masks, more often than not these are products formulated for solving problem issues but are simply too harsh for my sensitive skin. I was attracted to Fiini Oat and Bilberry powder mask for the properties in the ingredients. Oatmeal is often an ingredient highly recommended to eczema prone skin and I've had many an oat bath during my lifetime. It's the vitamin E, fatty acids, amino acids, and beta-glucans that protect, soothe and moisturise skin. Bilberries are also known as European wild blueberries and they are packed full of vitamins and nutrients. The bilberry powder is made by freeze drying which helps retain the vibrant natural properties. Other additional ingredients include pink clay and rice powder.

If you've ever used a powder mask before you'll know to mix with water or serum to create a smooth paste which you then apply to your skin. It doesn't look like much in the jar but the bilberries created a gorgeous deep purple colour which makes you smile, think Violet from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when she chews the gum. After 10 to 15 minutes the mask can be removed using warm water, I find a damp flannel can help with this process. The end results are soft skin and no I wasn't left with a purple tinge, I looked good as new.

Fiini Naturally Oat and Bilberry Powder Face Mask is a simple and honest product. Fun to use as part of a relaxing routine and beneficial to dry and sensitive skin. It doesn't promise you the world and I'm OK with that. Powder face masks can be a little messy for some people but I'm not overly fussy about this aspect. If you take your time it doesn't have to create a bathroom disaster just don't use your best white towels as I'm not sure if you'd experience staining (I have coloured flannels  so it wasn't an issue for me).

If you would like further information or to explore the product range, I recommend visiting Fiini Naturally website.

My Skincare Routine for Dry, Sensitive, Mature Skin prone to Eczema
(some of the items featured have been purchased by me but I have linked to past reviews where product many have originally been a Gifted PR sample)

I haven't updated you on my skincare routine in a while so let me share what I am using in lockdown. This is a good time to use up products I have laying around and a great excuse for additional pampering sessions, I'm now someone who uses face masks on the regular. If you are new here then to recap my skin type is prone to eczema, dry and sensitive (I have allergies) and I'm 43.

Let's start with cleansing which I do morning and evenings. I've been trialing the Lucy Bee Reviving Cleansing Cream but also using up Handmade Naturals Face Cleansing Oil. This cleansing oil is a long time favourite of mine. It has some super lovely ingredients and smells divine however it is free from essential oil allergens. Next up I will moisturise and in the mornings I'm using Green People Anti-Aging 24 Hour Cream. I think I'm on my third tube of this now. It just seems to suit my skin really well at the moment. I've really struggled finding fragrance free creams so glad this ones is working out for me. In the evenings I tend to apply oils so I'm currently using Myroo Super Boost Buriti. This is one of three Super Boost serums and I have loved them all. Buriti oil is great for protecting and brightening the skin, it defends against environmental stressors and is the richest source of beta-carotene.

Additional treatments over and above cleansing and moisturising don't tend to be a regular part of my routine. As I said lockdown has changed that and I want to use up products that were otherwise being neglected. I'm working my way through Odylique 3 in 1 Maca mask and Nature's Kitchen Gentle Care Face Mask. Both are great products which I enjoy using and seem to suit my skin very well. I always have Odylique Spot on Serum in my collection, it's a great all rounder for little emergencies so this often gets used on hormonal pimples, cuts and bites. I thought I'd throw in a mention for my Madara City CC cream because it adds some benefits and makes me feel human again thanks to the added tint. The SPF is useful for protecting the skin for brief moments outside. I would apply a separate sun cream if I was spending longer in the garden or at the beach, Green People was my go to last summer.

Reviews for Love Lula - Green People Neutral Scent Free Anti-Ageing 24 Hour Cream and Nature's Kitchen Purifying Skin Toning Gentle Care Face Mask
(Gifted)

I've been a customer of Green People for a long time and switched to the scent free range after tests revealed I have a sensitivity to linalool. Green People was established in 1997 and founded by a mother dealing with her daughter's skin allergies and eczema. Over the years I've mentioned the Scent Free Light Day Moisturiser but I branched out and decided to try the Green People Neutral Scent Free Anti-Ageing 24 Hour Cream

I just want to briefly mention that I wish brands would drop their Anti-Ageing labels as I honestly think we should be celebrating life and "anti-ageing" just feels negative. I'm in my 40s and when it comes to moisturisers I judge performance on maintaining hydration of dry skin, improving appearance of dermatitis and avoiding skin reactions. This moisturiser has a lovely texture which feels rich and hydrating without greasiness. It works well for morning and evening routines and sits perfectly under makeup. There are similarities in the formulations between the Light Day Moisturiser and the Anti-Ageing Cream but the latter is perhaps marginally feels better suited for the winter months when I'm greatly affected by dryness. The ingredients are suitable for Vegans and there are some personal favourites in the formulation - shea butter, jojoba, aloe vera, marshmallow, green tea, evening primrose and avocado. It is the ingredient Baicalin that gives the anti-ageing claim, apparently it is proven to reduce wrinkles but I'll let you be the judge of that. I like how my skin looks and feels when using Green People Neutral Scent Free Anti-Ageing 24 Hour Cream and I can see myself replacing this tube once empty.

Following on from my review of Nature's Kitchen Oat Milk Cleanser & Makeup Remover, I decided to try the Nature's Kitchen Purifying Skin Toning Gentle Care Face Mask. I'll be totally honest in that face masks are not my favourite products as I struggle finding formulations that are suitable for allergy and eczema prone skin. This mask from Nature's Kitchen stood out to me because it's free from fragrance allergens and contains oatmeal, oat milk, rice milk, cucumber, shea butter, green clay, chamomile, avocado - all of which are known for their gentle and soothing properties. Finding time to use a face mask isn't always easy but I'm enjoying using this product and so far I've had a positive experience. I like how my skin feels soft and refreshed after use. This is a mask that "disappears" into skin and that's a positive point for me as my skin can not tolerate masks that dry out and tighten. It's very easy to remove any left over residue with a damp cloth, another plus point as I'm not pulling at my delicate skin causing friction and irritation. Many Green Beauty brands have powder face masks which you mix to a paste but Nature's Kitchen is applied straight from the tube. I think it's fair to say that Nature's Kitchen Purifying Skin Toning Gentle Care Face Mask has tick all my boxes and I would happily recommend to others.

Lovea Ideal Hydration Organic Coconut Fabric Face Mask
(Gifted PR Sample)

Sadly the reality of living with sensitive skin and allergies is that not everything goes according to plan when I choose new skincare. You’ll notice this latest review is light on products and that’s because not every item I picked ended up working for me. I’m going to focus on the positive and I may revisit the other products at a later date after further research.

Admittedly the Lovea Ideal Hydration Organic Coconut Fabric Face Mask was something I threw into my selection last minute without much consideration aside from checking ingredients. It turned out to be an unexpected winner. Whilst I’m familiar with the name Lovea, I hadn’t sampled any of their products. Lovea is an independent company, founded in 1992 in south west France. Their range includes suncare (inspired by the beauty secrets of Polynesia) and beauty products for face, body and hair. Products are suitable for Vegans and COSMOS organic certified by ECOCERT.

Sheet masks seem very much on trend at the moment and I can see the appeal. However when choosing this type of mask I think it’s important to consider your environmental impact, many are made of synthetic fibres similar to wet wipes so they don’t decompose easily. Lovea are using 100% organic cotton which you may be able to compost but I’m unsure about the other ingredients it is soaked in. You do need to bin not flush these products and I’d make sheet masking an occasional treat rather than regular treatment.

Putting this aside I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of Lovea Ideal Hydration Organic Coconut Water Sheet Mask. The active ingredients are aloe vera and coconut pulp water which I found to be soothing giving a fresh feeling and cooling sensation. Once I removed the mask my skin felt refreshed and glowing, even my husband commented on this. Any excess serum left on your face can be wiped away or massage into your skin; I opted for the latter because I love the extra hydration for my dry skin.

My final thoughts are the Lovea Ideal Hydration Organic Coconut Water Sheet Mask is a fun, affordable product which performed better than expected. I’m pleased I took the plunge to try because now I’m keen to explore more from Lovea's range.

Review Bodhi & Birch Avo Bao Cleansing Balm
You may have heard that Bodhi & Birch launched a Superfoods Series consisting of five new skincare products – Avo Bao Cleansing Balm, Lemon Water Hydrosol Tonic, Super25 Botanical Serum, Tomato Seed Cleansing Oil and Renshen Root Exfoliant & Mask. The collection is multi-use and mixable allowing you to create a bespoke routine and every product is suitable for Vegans.

The Superfood Series is unlike other products from Bodhi & Birch as the range is free from essential oils. I was absolutely ecstatic to hear this. Although I buy Bodhi & Birch for others, I had to cease using them on myself following my diagnosis with linalool* sensitivity in 2014. I’d go as far as to say its a dream come true to once again enjoy Elijah's amazing creations.

I had the pleasure of being part of the focus group prior to launch so I’ve sampled the entire range. The stand outs for me are the Avo Bao Cleansing Balm, Super25 Botanical Serum and Tomato Seed Cleansing Oil which will come as no surprise to those who know me. During initial testing phase, I felt these products improve the look of my skin and whilst it might be coincidental there was a significant improvement in my dermatitis. After launch I received a full size Avo Bao Cleansing Balm and Super25 Botanical Serum. The serum is safely stashed away at the moment because I need to work through open products but I know already how much I love it.

I immediately got stuck into the Avo Bao cleansing balm and seriously this product is a beaut! It contains some fantastic ingredients – Avocado, Baobab, Green Coffee and Spirulina and one of my all time favourites Plum Kernel. The latter gives this wonderful delicate scent of marzipan and anyone who follows my reviews closely knows it’s a fragrance I adore and talk about regularly. I love when brands are creative with their formulations by using naturally fragrant ingredients that avoid allergens. As a side note, I really would love to see Bodhi & Birch Superfood Series entering the Free From Skincare Awards next year.

I’m using Avo Bao as sparingly as possible because I never want to run out. A little goes a long way and it has a wonderful buttery texture. The balm is fragile in the recent heatwave but regardless this cleansing balm feels luxurious to massage across the skin. It’s almost a spiritual moment to cleanse at the end of the day and I take my time allowing a moment to feel like I’m having an expensive spa treatment. Avo Bao cleansing balm is very easy to remove with a damp cloth and doesn’t leave behind a greasy residue. I adore the green colour it makes me smile and stands out from the crowd.

The Superfood Series is luxurious and in comparison to others you feel a sense of love, care and attention to details in their creation which warrants a higher price tag. Bodhi & Birch have taken a bold step formulating without essential oils and for anyone who feels unsure about this don’t be, Elijah is a skincare genius these products are truly wonderful, you are in safe hands.

Five Natural Skincare Favourites for May
Disclaimer - contains PR samples

Here are five favourites which I've been reaching for consistently every day. Links will take you to full reviews (or stockist) but here's a small re-cap on each one.

Deep Steep Argan Oil Fig & Apricot Hand Wash - I've been using Deep Steep hand washes for years and I often pick them up at TK Maxx. I'll clear the shelves of them so I never run out. It's the fragrances that I love and I describe Deep Steep as a more natural alternative to The Body Shop.

Green People Light Day Moisturiser (Scent Free) - despite the name I do find this lotion hydrating and it's perfect for warmer weather. If you use heavier lotions but get that sweaty feeling on your face during humid days, then this Green People moisturiser would be my recommendation. You can always layer with other products is your skin is feeling particularly parched. I also love that Green People have a range of fragrance free skincare making it ideal for those prone to sensitivity and allergies.

Saint Come Aromaspray Mint Eucalyptus - I picked this up from Love Lula on a bit of a whim. Due to my allergies home fragrances can be a little tricky so natural alternatives are more appealing. Aromaspray is vegan and contains premium grade essential oils, packaging is recyclable and there are no hidden propellant gas or synthetic ingredients. I will say that the Mint Eucalyptus does smell reminiscent of toothpaste or mouthwash so I might opt for a different fragrance next time. I mainly use this for kitchen and bathroom smells and yes I could open the window but sometimes you want a quick fix.

Zkin Organic Brightening & Hydrating Masque - this mask allows me to relax and take some for myself whilst treating my skin. I enjoy the temporary lift it gives me when my skin is feeling dull and tired. It's also very easy to remove which is important to me because I have delicate skin.

Bodhi & Birch Avo Bao Cleansing Balm - I had the pleasure of being part of the focus group for a new range from Bodhi & Birch. At some point I'll write a full review but the Superfoods Series are beautiful products which also happen to be free from essential oils. This is a luxurious natural and vegan friendly balm created with so much passion and love, Elijah has used one of my favourite ingredients plum kernel which gives a delicate marzipan aroma without allergens. It's a bold step to make given that other Bodhi products have been formulated around essential oils but I for one am delighted.

Review Zk’in Certified Organic Brightening & Hydrating Masque and Soothing Hand Cream
It’s no secret that I have a special place in my heart for Australian skincare and that comes from a long term love of the country. I recently was given the opportunity to choose products from Zk’in. This Australian brand ticks several ethical boxes, its COSMOS certified organic, cruelty free and vegan. For several weeks I’ve been using Zk’in Soothing Hand Cream and Brightening & Hydrating Masque.

Zk’in Soothing Hand Cream
You’ll know from previous reviews that I’m addicted to testing hand creams. Winter is the perfect time for me to put any product through its paces. The Soothing Hand Cream contains "clinically proven skin repair actives" and colloidal oatmeal to relive inflammation and itching. To be honest when I first applied this light weight cream I was very skeptical that it would help my dry skin but I was proved wrong. It does exactly as it claims and my skin feels smooth and soft with lasting results. It sinks in quickly and beautifully without any hint of greasiness. The packaging is unique because the tube has a pump dispenser which is a nice addition for ease of application.

Zk’in Brightening & Hydrating Masque
I don’t use face masks that often because I have trouble finding one that suits my delicate skin. I took a leap of faith with the Brightening & Hydrating Masque and it paid off. I have enjoyed a weekly application without any sign of upsetting the balance of my skin which at this time is suffering a dermatitis flare up. The formulation is ready to use and contains aloe vera, cocoa, kaolin radish root, glycerin, sunflower seed oil and seaweed. I love how easy the mask is to remove (use a damp cloth). Often if I have to scrub at my skin I can end up with unwanted inflammation. I would agree that this masque lives up to its name as I see temporary brightness and hydration. I don’t feel the immediate need to follow up with a moisturise which is a positive sign for me. In the past I often find clay can leave an unpleasant feeling of tightness across the face. The only downside for me would be the luxury price tag.

Just to note that some of you that are ingredient savvy might pick up "parfum" on the ingredient list. This is fully explained on Z’kin’s website and it something that I have encountered before with other brands.

"While Parfum can be used to describe synthetic fragrances, in this instance it is a completely natural blend of vegetal derived fragrances obtained by fractional steam distillation. We have had to list "Parfum " on our ingredient panels because it is the correct INCI name (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) for one of the natural preservatives we use called Naticide. There is no alternative legal way to list this ingredient." zkinorganics.com.au

I wish I would try more the Zk’in range but unfortunately they are unsuitable for my allergies however I’ve been very impressed with the performance and quality of hand cream and mask.

Have you tried Zk'in?

Skin & Tonic, Isla Apothecary, Ere Perez
(Disclaimer – contains affiliate link. I'm part of the Love Lula Blogger Programme and can select PR samples each month, I am not obligated to review and all opinions are my own. Prices correct at time of publication)

One of the biggest problems I encounter with online shopping is when the item arrives I notice the packaging information differs from the website. It might seem insignificant to some consumers but when you have allergies and a vital piece of information is missing, it can be money down the drain.

Skin & Tonic Coco Mask
I spotted on the bottle three allergens which are not listed on the website (I also check S&T site and it's not noted there either). Allergens only have to be listed when they are at a certain percentage within the formulation so I just assumed it was irrelevant due to the the nature of the product. Cosmetic laws requires labelling of 26 fragrance allergens but I don't think that stretches to websites.

Skin & Tonic Ingredient listsWhile I appreciate Skin & Tonic/Love Lula are not doing anything wrong its just extremely frustrating. I don't want the hassle of double checking everything by email before ordering. I have contacted everyone concerned, promises were made to get the situation addressed but I haven't seen the changes. I've been unable to test the mask for review and have passed it on to my sister. Perhaps at a later date I'll share her thoughts on my social media channels.

Skin & Tonic Naked lip balm
A brand that offers a fragrance free product will always receive praise from me. The ingredients are simply shea butter, beeswax and coconut oil, all of which are hydrating for skin. It might have been nice to see a vegan formulation but beeswax isn't something I've completely eliminated from my skincare routine. I find this lip balm comfortable to wear, I enjoy having no flavour and the packaging works well for application.

Ere Perez Carrot Colour Pot in Holy
I've been banging on about Ere Perez non stop recently and I ordered another Carrot Colour Pot in Holy. I actually featured this in another article so I won't go into great detail again but I really like these multipurpose products. To find out more and see swatches, follow this link - November Love Lula Reviews.

Isla Apothecary Ritual Pulse Point Therapy
I've seen many people speak highly of Isla Apothecary so that prompted me to try something from their range. It was very naught of my to pick this pulse point roll on because it does contain linalool. You're probably all confused why I'll test this but not the mask. Linalool can trigger my dermatitis and I currently have eczema on my face so I can't take the risk to worsen my situation. I've been able to tolerate the pulse point on my wrists. The blend of ingredients is lovely and includes coconut oil, roman chamomile, eucalyptus and lavender. I find the aroma pleasant and soothing. If you're someone who enjoys using aromatherapy for headaches, stress etc then I'd recommend checking out Isla Apothecary.

Have you tried any of the products mentioned?

Swap clairns glossier palmers the body shop for green beauty alternatives
Its been a few months since I wrote one of these posts. I watch a fair amount of Favourites on YouTube and that often gets me thinking about greener alternatives. I certainly don't want to make anyone feel guilty if they use "mainstream" products but I hope this helps for those who do want to change their skincare routine.

Review Odylique 3 In 1 Maca Mask
You all know Odylique is a brand I heavily rely upon and a number of their products are part of my daily routine. They recently launched a 3 in 1 Maca Mask and I’ve had the opportunity to put it to the test. I should probably explain that face masks are not a regular part of my routine. I tend to use them before special occasions (like the run up to my wedding last year) but I have to be 100% confident with the brand as I’ve experienced a number of reactions to masks over my lifetime.

Odylique’s 3 in 1 Maca Mask contains green and white mineral clay, maca root, baobab fruit, oat, sugar cane, mint and myrtle essential oils. It comes in powder form so you can mix with water or any other liquid of your choosing depending on your skin type. For sensitive skin yoghurt or coconut milk is a suggestion but I opted for my favourite manuka floral water. When the mask is applied the sensation felt is a combination of a slight tingle and cooling (I’d guess that would be from the mint).

Powder masks can sometimes be a little tricky to mix. I have a tendency to put too much liquid into them. You want to achieve a paste rather than runny soup. The trick is to add a little amount of liquid gradually, stirring as you go until you get the desired consistency. Once you’ve managed that, simply apply to the face then sit back and relax for 15 – 20 minutes. When you are finished I’ve found the easiest way to remove any mask is to hold a damp flannel to your face to loosen the clay, then use circular movements to gently exfoliate and that helps clean the product from your face. If you have sensitive skin I would recommend not allowing the face mask to dry completely as it often makes removing a little tough. You work harder to clean the skin and I find that’s when my sensitive skin can become “angry”. Rubbing too hard even with a soft damp flannel can be a little too aggressive.

My final thoughts for the Odylique 3 in 1 Maca Mask are I am enjoying using it every so often and I find that after use my skin feels refreshed. Anyone who loves face masks is sure to like this product. Add to that the fact that it’s Vegan, Fairtrade and Organic which is pretty awesome.

Are you a fan of face masks? Have you tried the Odylique 3 in 1 Maca Mask?

Series: Swap YouTuber Favourites for Green Beauty Alternatives

For those not familiar with this series I pick out mainstream products mentioned in Favourite videos and suggest Green Beauty Swaps for them.

NARS Tinted Moisturiser – I use tinted moisturisers on a daily basis and my current favourites are Madara Moon Flower Tinting Fluid and JOIK BB Cream. Other alternatives are Dr Hauschka Tinted Day Cream, Estelle & Thild All-in One Tinted Moisturiser and Green People Age Defy SPF 15 DD Tinted Moisturiser.

Bobbi Brown Bronzer - I struggled to track down ingredients online so I suspect the worst with this brand. Green Beauty Bronzers are quite easy to find and there are brands to suit every budget. Check out Ere Perez, Inika, Bellapierre, Lavera and W3LL People.

Dior Sugar Lip Scrub – I am astonished that anyone would spend £24 on a lip scrub, you really are just buying into a label. Lip Scrubs are easy to DIY from the contents of your kitchen cupboard. Simply use caster sugar with olive oil or coconut oil or honey. I guess the benefit of the Dior scrub is it's portable and not messy so you could swap for ILIA Balmy Nights

GlamGlow Supermud – you might be surprised to spot these on my swaps but there are some undesirable ingredients in the Glam Glow range (e.g. mineral oils & Methylisothiazolinone). My first thought as an alternative is the Madara Ultra Purifying Mud Mask but there are many others I'd recommend such as Odylique 3 in 1 Maca Mask, Botanicals Balancing Detox Mask, Evolve Raw Cacao & Coconut Radiant Glow Mask.

The Body Shop Almond Milk & Honey – I’ve seen this range recommended for sensitive skin prone to eczema and it doesn’t sit well with me. To promote a range as almond and honey when those ingredients are very low down on the list feels like a rip off. This range contains possible eczema triggering ingredients like parfum and other undesirables. Also “almond milk” is interesting phrase for what is actually almond oil. I can't find you an exact swap but Weleda and Dr Hauschka have an almond range. Many Green Beauty lovers will just use almond oil and honey by themselves.

Starbucks Iced Black Americano – when I saw a blogger recommend their favourite coffee it got me thinking, if you’re a regular customer have you considered switching to a reusable cup to cut down on landfill waste? According to the latest statistics, the UK throws away around three billion disposable cups a year. The problem is many disposable cups can only be recycled at a handful of specialist places (its polyethylene which waterproofs them that causes problems) so majority end up in landfill. If you'd like to help the planet then take a look at Ecoffee Cup for stylish designs.

Many of the products mentioned above can be found at Naturisimo and Content Beauty. If you would like to read my last swap article then click here - No 5 - Green Beauty Alternatives featuring Nathalie Bond Organics, S5 Skincare, Balm Balm and Trilogy

Review Sukin Nourishing Chia Seed Oil

Over the years I’ve only tried a handful of products from Sukin so when I was given the opportunity to try something from the Super Greens range I accepted. Sukin is an Australian brand launched in 2007, offering affordable natural skincare with an impressive free from promise (no sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium laureth sulphate, synthetic fragrances, animal derivatives, harsh detergents, propylene glycol, artificial colours, triethanolamine, mineral oils, EDTA or parabens).

The Super Greens range includes a mask, scrub, serum, moisturiser and oil, all of which sound great but I chose the Nourishing Chia Seed Oil because it is free from essential oils. The blend of ingredients is quite interesting. Chia seed is the top ingredient but the “super green” name comes from the combination of kale, spirulina, parsley and chlorella. There is also hemp seed, avocado, olive and baobab. I’m certainly not going to make any claims about putting “super green” ingredients on to your skin but if you love them in your diet then why not go that extra step?

The other day I spotted a question asking how people use oils and I think many people are still hesitant or unsure how to use them. Once you figure out what ingredients are best for you, then I believe you should use them depending on your mood and how your skin feels. I will use on a morning and evening some days and just evenings on others. I use them alone or under moisturisers if my skin is feeling parched. I tend to use oils more often in winter than summer.

In comparison to others, I find Sukin Nourishing Chia Seed Oil feels light and my skin absorbs it quickly. It is recommended for all skin types so worth a try even if you have an opposite skin type to my own (which is dry & eczema prone). Since there are no essential oils in this serum I’d describe it as bland and neutral in scent (nothing too offensive on the nostrils). In all honesty this oil wouldn’t completely replace other favourites as I would miss my much loved rosehip. Saying that what I do think is totally awesome to see is authentic natural products on the high street as Sukin is now available at Holland & Barrett and Boots (it’s also widely available online).

Have you tried any Sukin products? Do you have a favourite?

Swap Youtube Favourites for Green Beauty Natural Organic
I'm continuing with my series to bring you some more Youtube Favourite Swaps. The concept behind these is I’m looking at “mainstream” product recommendations and finding “Green” alternatives. I want to show you that it is possible to buy products which are similar to the high street options but better for you and the environment.

La Roche Posay ANTHELIOS XL SPF 50+ BB COMFORT CREAM (Tinted) It’s a little tricky to match the high SPF in this product (I’m only focusing on what’s available to me in the UK) but we can find some alternatives with better ingredients. Andalou Naturals have several tinted BB/CC creams (SPF 30) to suit different skin types. I've also seen great reviews for COOLA Organic Suncare Collection (SPF 30, Matte Tint, Unscented).

Tula Exfoliating Treatment Mask - this product is free from a few key ingredients which green beauties like to avoid but contains Disodium EDTA and Tetrasodium EDTA. Also it is not suitable for Vegans (milk protein & lactose). Let’s swap for the Evolve Radiant Glow Mask which smells amazing from raw cacao, you leave on for 5 minutes and then it exfoliates when you remove from your skin.

Becca Mineral Blush – a few natural brands offer pressed powdered products but when it comes to blush I prefer to recommend those without carmine so I’d suggest Ere Perez Pure Rice Powder Blush which comes is 3 colour ways.

Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm – the natural skincare world is full of wonderful cleansing balms, this has to be the easiest product to swap, there really is no need to use products that test on animals and contain petrochemicals. Try Lyonsleaf Beauty Balm, The Rose Tree Carrot & Mango Cleansing Balm or Gaia Creams Coconut Mousse

Clarins Daily Energizer Daily Energising Beauty Balm - from what I can tell looks like a sheer pink tinted lip balm. Let us swap to affordable and cruelty free alternatives such as Everyday Minerals Tinted Lip Balms (iherb), Pacifica Colour Quench Lip Tint, Yes To Carrots Peachy Keen Balm or Hurraw Tinted Cinnamon lip balm.

Sainsbury's White Creme Bath Family – this is cheap and cruelty free but little else going for it as far as I'm concerned. You may still need to compromise on some ingredients with natural foaming products but how about going organic as well, try Organic Surge Clove, Orange & Geranium Foaming Bath.

Guerlain Stop Spot Anti-Blemish Treatment – for this one I’m going to suggest OY! Cover & Clear Spot It which not only has great ingredients but double the quantity and half the price!

If you have any swap suggestions I'd love to hear them and you can read my last swap article then click here - Swap No 2 Green Beauty Alternatives featuring Inlight, Bodhi & Birch, Green People, Desert Essence and Antipodes

Bridal Beauty Pre-Wedding Skincare

April is wedding month and in preparation I have been giving my skin extra attention. I am very good at facial routines but I’ll admit I am lazy when it comes to my body. In the run up to the Wedding, my main priority is keeping things simple and trying to avoid eczema/dermatitis breakouts. I made a conscious decision not to try too many new products and at the beginning of March every Sunday is home spa day. I thought I would share with you some added extras which have become part of my new weekend routine.

Mel Millis Phytonutri Qi Plankton Skin Remedy
I am not a regular user of masks, I am a little lazy but they can trigger my Urticaria, however, the Mel Millis Phytonutri Qi Plankton Skin Remedy is safe for me to use. This product can be used as a cleanser or 10 minute mask and promises to “Restore brightness, increase elasticity and firmness. plump skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, gently exfoliate, rebalance moisture levels.” I will wear it whilst having a shower because I don't like masks to dry out completely and the steam will keep it slightly moist.

I shy away from scrubs because of my sensitive skin but this Estelle & Thild is lovely. It gives enough scrubby action without leaving me red raw. I am still careful and limit how often I use it but in the final weeks this is now part of my Sunday routine.

I am taking care to moisturise my body from top to toe after scrubbing. I'm using a combination of this Nathalie Bond body oil and Deep Steep Snowflake Body lotion (not pictured). I'm generally lazy with body products so I've promised myself to do this at least once a week.

I’m taking care of my hands because I want to show off my ring without feeling embarrassed about flaky skin. My hands take a beating in the winter months and I get very frustrated how dry they become. This Rather Lovely hand cream is unscented which eliminates irritation from essential oils. It feels nice and nourishing but without being heavy or sticky.

I ran out of weeks to squeeze in more haircuts so I have to go a little longer between cuts and colouring. In preparation for this I’m applying a hair mask every Sunday and using this one from Lulu & Boo. This is a good product which works well for me and helps combat dryness.

Lip Balms – Cray Rumors & Myroo
These are just a couple of the lip balms I currently have in my collection. The main reason for mentioning is again I’m putting in effort to have the perfect kissable lips! I want my lipstick to feel comfortable to wear and it helps to have skin in tip top condition.

review Mallow + White Natural & Organic Skincare
You may have already heard the news that White Wash Soaps has re-branded to Mallow & White. My discovery of this brand was a combination of chatting with Amber (Amber's Beauty Talk) and my involvement with the Free From Skincare Awards.

Mallow & White is a UK based brand producing handmade natural, vegan and organic skincare. They believe in simplicity and promised their products contain six ingredients or less. Currently there are three facial oils and three masks to choose from depending on your skin type. I was sent the Soothe range for sensitive skin.

Soothe Gentle Clay Mask
"This therapeutic clay face mask for sensitive skin is 100% natural and made purely with 4 carefully chosen ingredients. Each ingredient works hard to nourish, cleanse and soften the skin. It will help soothe irritated skin, reduce redness, and support the skin’s natural healing process."

The ingredients for this mask are white clay, marshmallow root powder, cornstarch and lavender essential oil. I like that this product can be used in two ways, either as a 3-5 minute facial treatment or as an exfoliator. As this does contain lavender my prefer method is for exfoliation and since there are no granules it is very gentle.

Soothe Facial Oil
This oil contains jojoba, apricot kernel, kukui nut, chamomile and lavender. It's a delightful blend with a pleasant aroma. The combination of ingredients offer soothing, healing and anti inflammatory properties. Sadly, the lavender is not sitting well with me so I've had to put this to one side. I would like to offer a suggestion to Mallow & White. There is a gap in the market for skincare without essential oils and I think the removal of these ingredients could give more choice to a wider range of customers who experience skin sensitivity.

Overall, I can't fault the branding and ethos of Mallow & White. The packaging is stylish and a huge improvement on its former identity as White Wash Soaps. If you follow my twitter and instagram you will know my products arrived packaged with petals and popcorn, a unique touch which many seemed to like.

Congratulations to Mallow + White I suspect your products will be very popular with the Green Beauty Community.

Samples - Living Nature, Pulpe De Vie, TEWC, Madara, Herbfarmacy
In the goody bag from the October Meet Up I received several sachet samples which I have been working my way through. Of course, I will only provide first impressions of these products since most sachets only contain enough product for a couple of applications.

The Just Face Cream, is fragrance free so that sparked my interest. I would consider buying the full size but I hesitate because it contains Phenoxyethanol. Not an ingredient I avoid entirely but one I use with caution. I had previously reviewed the cleansing mousse back in 2012 and I wasn't impressed. With continued use, I did not feel it was appropriate for my skin type but it's fine for a one off.

Living Nature Extra Hydrating toning gel, Nourishing Day Cream & Firming Flax Serum
I think the sample packaging is great, the snap opening makes for easy application and you can squeeze every last drop of product out. All three products were pleasant to use but the one that stood out for me was the Nourishing Day cream. It felt rich without being overly heavy. I would consider buying a full size but the price is the sticking point for me 50ml = £31 which is more than I would normally spend. (Please note some Living Nature products contain an ingredient derived from milk)

Pulpe De Vie LOVE ME TONIGHT Anti-ageing Night Cream, Pulpe De Vie COZY CUDDLE Radiant Face Cream, SWEET FRAPPE Mask and Face Scrub & LUSCIOUS GLOW Pearly Body Milk (provided by Botanical Brands)
Pulpe De Vie is a fun and fruity brand. The scents are delightful but slightly overpowering for my own personal taste. That being said I did enjoy using up the samples as the creams felt pleasant on my skin (I passed along the body milk to my sister). The mask & face scrub is a novel product to use. A three step process - apply to dry skin and leave 5 minutes, massage gently to cleanse and exfoliate, then add water to turn the mask into a milk which can be washed away. Would I buy full sizes? I am undecided, packaging and scents made me feel these products could be more suited to teens/young adults.

Madara Anti-Ageing Day Cream, Anti-Ageing Night Cream & Deep Moisture Cream (provided by www.mypure.co.uk)
The sample collection covered different skin types so I selected the ones appropriate to me and passed on the rest. I am not new to the brand and have bought Madra products in the past. The one issue I have with this brand is the scent, it’s strong and a little unusual. The creams were nice to use but the only one that stood out for me was the Deep Moisture Cream. I would consider buying a full size bottle. Madara is a good brand for those who are Vegan and I noticed the claim (on their website) that products are nut free.

TEWC Grapefruit Facial Exfoliator (provided by Vanessa's Choice)
This exfoliator contains fine scrub particles but they are still a little too abrasive for my sensitive skin. As this product is a balm consistency, it is heavy with oil which does leave a greasy residue. I disliked this sensation on my skin and found it difficult to remove. I would be more inclined to use this on my body rather than my face.
