finishing powder

4 July 2013

I had already tried a number of mineral makeup brands before I settled on Everyday Minerals. There was Elemental Beauty, Green People, BM Beauty (rebranded as Beautiful Movements), Funky Fresh and Karma Naturals. Out of curiosity I had another browse of the web to see what else was out there and that is what lead me to My Beautiful Earth

MBE use 100% minerals and is free from nanos, preservatives, bismuth, ultramarines, kaolin, (except our concealers), talc, soya flour, rice flour, (except our sensitive formula), corn flour, artificial colours and no Animal Testing. The mineral powder foundations are available in four formulations – Normal, Healing, Sensitive & Rosacea and Pure Pearl Skin Renewal. If you are not keen on powder foundation there is a liquid version.

I ordered samples of the normal foundation in Light Honey Beige, Light Neutral Beige and Natural Fair, a finishing powder and a blush (Rose Pink Glow). The website is not the best for swatches so I chose from the descriptions. The colour range seems good and it looks to me like there is a colour for everyone starting from light (snow white) to dark (afro Caribbean).

I found it very difficult to photograph swatches. My skin is pale and so are these products so they don't show up easily. The Finishing Powder blends into my skin and has a delicate shimmer. The blush is pigmented and gives a strong flush of colour to my cheeks, it's nice but not to my taste. I think out of the foundations I would chose Light Neutral Beige or Light Honey Beige as they both work well for my skin tone. I definitely would look to buy one of these when I use up my Everyday Minerals. Overall, I am impressed with quality and performance so I recommend you have a look at the website.

Everyday Minerals Powder Foundation
I have been reading "No More Dirty Looks" and it got me think that I slightly fell off my natural beauty wagon during 2012. The hard part about going natural is knowing your ingredients. Parabens, Petroleum and SLS/SLES are common knowledge but what about the likes of Phenoxyethanol, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate. These are ingredients which I am spotting in my Free From products. When I wrote about Sukin's cleanser they later sent me an article about their use of Phenoxyethanol. Their justification "Sukin use this ingredient at less than 1%, well under the limits set for this preservative." Trouble is companies do not have to tell us this, there is no way of knowing what percentage of ingredient a product contains by looking at the labels.

Where am I going with all this? Well, I am overhauling my skincare products. First on the list is ditching my high street foundations. They have gone in the bin as I broke out with eczema on my face. It’s only a small patch and probably not noticeable to most but blooming annoying to me. Now that Boots has discontinued my No 7 foundation there is no longer an excuse to buy this crap any more.

I am sure I have mentioned it elsewhere on my blog but when shopping for mineral foundations the advice is to avoid bismuth oxychloride. It is non toxic but it can cause irritation and dry skin. Non mineral powders will contain parabens, silicones and PEG. According to No More Dirty Looks (page 138) acne prone girls should avoid cornstarch (zea mays) as it can feed acne causing bacteria.

I am currently using Green People foundation which I reviewed but I am still not happy about it containing talc. I decided to look for something different. I already experimented with Funky Fresh, Karma Naturals, BM Beauty, Lily Lolo and Elemental Beauty but wanted to keep looking at the market. Everyday Minerals is often talked about by bloggers across the pond. I was slightly overwhelmed by the colour choices so opted to buy some samples. My advice is study the information available on the Everyday Minerals website before making a purchase, you will find instructions regarding colours for specific skin tones.

Yesterday I tried the Jojoba Base in Nude. I like the coverage and feels silky on skin but the colour is not correct for me. My boyfriend said I looked like I was wearing more make up than usual. I took that to mean the coverage was heavier than I usually wear. My foundations are normally very light plus I think the colour was not helping matters. I have yet to try the two other samples. I ordered semi matte base in Fair Medium and Fairly Light. My suspicion is my colour choices may be a little off the mark. Once I get the correct colour I do intend to buy the full size.

Samples are inexpensive and the best way to trial products. Have you tried Everyday Minerals? Any suggestions which colour may suit a light complexion with red undertones?

Physicians Formula Organic Wear Pressed Powder
Back in September I blogged about finding Physicians Formula pressed powder at TK Maxx.. I knew of the brand from American bloggers. I love the fact that this is 100% free from harsh chemicals, synthetic preservatives, paraben, GMO's, synthetic colours, synthetic fragrances and cruelty free.

The packaging is functional and unique.  The case is made of paper with a perspex lid. One side opens up to access the powder and the other side has a mirror and a small brush, similar to those in the Benefit powders.

The powder is fine, soft and silky and the two shades work well together.  I am very happy using this to set my foundation.  I just wish the brand was available in the UK.  Looking at the website and seeing other blogger reviews this is very much a make-up brand that appeals to me.  I highly recommend grabbing these products if you see them in TK Maxx. I paid £4.99 for this powder.

Physicians formula organic wear pressed powder
I have a little haul shopping for you today.  I've been rummaging in TK Maxx again.  Its becoming an addiction.  My local stores have been a little disappointing recently I am hoping for a new influx of goods. I picked up Physicians Formula pressed powder which is 100% free from harsh chemicals, synthetic preservatives, paraben, GMO's, synthetic colours, synthetic fragrances and cruelty free.

You know my other passion in life is food. I went to my newly discovered local independent health food store and purchased the goodies you see below.

free from and vegan food haul

Daymer Bay Ice Teas (Elderflower Green Tea & Mango), Amy's Kitchen Dairy Free Macaroni Cheeze, Clive's Pies (Mint Chickpea), Bessant & Drury Dairy Free Lemon Ice Cream, Fry's Pops, Edam Style Sheese, Lucy's Cinnamon Thins & Maple Bliss, The Living Food Kitchen Raw Pumpkin Pie and Organica Vegan Golden Coconut & Dark Chocolate Bars.

This week I also tried out Redwood's Meatless Feast Pizza (meat, egg & dairy free). This was better than the Mama Cucina Pizza because it's not gluten free and had a good amount of topping.

Yesterdays lunch time treat was a visit to GBK. Oh how I love a good falafel burger and a can of L&P. That sums up my Saturday. I hope everyone has been having a lovely weekend.

Mineral Makeup by Beautiful Me Cosmetics
I'm updating this post in 2020 because I believe the original company featured is now known Beautiful Me Cosmetics.

Back in 2011 I reviewed the Dewy Perfection Finishing Powder and it is still available under the same name. The finishing powder was a light peach pink colour with a delicate shimmer. It felt silky soft on the skin and the shimmer gave a dewy finish rather than a shiny sparkle. It was lightweight and blends easily with my natural skin tone.

Are you similar to me and always looking for the perfect face powder? I guess I have a traditional approach to my routine and like to set my liquid foundation with a dusting of powder. Mineral foundations are currently very trendy but I don't see many natural brands offering setting or translucent powders. In a bid to find a face powder with fewer undesirable ingredients, I discovered theBalm Sexy Mama Translucent Powder. It is free from Parabens, Sulfates, Synthetic Fragrances, Synthetic Dyes and Phthalates.

I confess I was attracted by the packaging and the design reminds me of Benefit. Here is what theBalm say about their product - "Powder your face without a trace. This sexy formula with revolutionary, tiny oil-absorbing spheres removes dreaded shine leaving you with a soft matter finish. But wait, there is more. Sexy Mama has powers like no other powder, its virtually invisible - fooling even the most attentive admirer."

At first I was a little worried about the colour on my fair skin but fear not it really is a neutral/translucent shade. I feel I get an 'air brushed photo ready' finish. It is silky and feather light and seems to last the entire day. I do not have oily skin but it does help with shiny skin when I get some perspiration. Overall I really like this product it does what I require and the colour is perfect for my skin tone.

Have you tried theBalm cosmetics? What did you think? If anyone has a face powder recommendation I would love to hear about it.
