REN No 1 Purity Cleansing Balm

REN No 1 Purity Cleansing Balm

I have tried a number of balm cleansers since I started my blog (100% OrganicsSutiLulu & Boo) and I have enjoyed them all. The reason I like them is I think they offer me an extra moisture barrier. When you have eczema your skin is dry because you do not produce as much fats and oils as other people so are less able to retain water. I had some vouchers to cash in and on a whim I purchased the REN No 1 Purity Cleansing Balm. REN is a brand I admire for its ingredient policy but unfortunately the presence of my food allergens does not allow me the freedom to buy many products in the range.

The REN cleansing balm comes in a tube which is unusual for this type of cleanser. The balm is soft in texture and with a good squeeze of the tube it is easily dispensed. The other feature to this balm is after massaging into skin you apply warm water and it dissolves into a milky consistency. Anyone who loves rose will enjoy the fragrance.

I have been testing this cleanser for a few weeks before writing my review. Initially I was singing its praises on Twitter but as time passed I began to change my mind. I like the texture of the balm and the way it removes easily but I feel as if my skin is left tight and dry. This does not happen immediately its a few minutes after cleansing. I will cleanse my face, brush my teeth and then moisturise. It is during the brushing teeth stage that my skin tightens. The funny thing is when I voiced my opinion on Twitter, three people came forward and mentioned that they thought this cleanser was hard to remove and left behind a greasy residue. Weird as I am not getting the same results. On the back of the tube it says you can sweep over eyes. Oh boy, if you accidentally get this in your eye you will quickly induce potty mouth. I know it’s not uncommon for a product to sting but I don’t recall experiencing this with other balm cleansers.

It is not easy to write about products you dislike but I do think it's important to keep a balance on my blog. Not everything I test is going to work for me. This cleanser claims to be suitable for all skin types but sometimes I feel that is an ambiguous statement, can products really be suitable for all? Sadly, REN balm cleanser and I decided to end our relationship. I made it through half a tube before we parted company. Has anyone else had a good or bad experience with this cleanser?

UPDATE 05/03/15 - REN have announced they are being bought out by Unilever. I decided not to remove this post but I will no longer be supporting the brand. Unilever is questionable in terms of ethical business and animal testing.
