I won't insist everyone should be using a menstrual cup because some people can find them difficult to use and there should be no shame in feeling this way. I have struggled for years and have previously written an honest experience of using my period cup. Even after two years I've not fully converted to using it every month. If you are undecided about using cups it may be of interest to understand some of the benefits. I'm not an expert but I've gathered some notes through researching based on my own curiosities.
- Reusable, environmentally friendly and can last 10 years before needing to replace
- They don't dry the vagina like tampons as a menstrual cup collects your flow rather than absorb
- When used correctly you should not experience leaks
- Cups are made from medical grade silicone so unlike pads and tampons there are no concerns for chemical such as bleach and dioxin
- Many people claim a reduction in cramping when using a cup although there are no clinical studies to support this
- Cups eliminate odor often associated to menstrual fluid when exposed to air.
- More research may be required but cups are safe to use, a handful of TSS cases have been linked but there may have been other contributing factors to these infections
- Reusable products may benefit people who experience period poverty
I was recently gifted a Saalt menstrual cup who have recently launched into the UK. It's available in two sizes with two firmness options. Each cup lasts for 10 years, providing a sustainable alternative to tampons and pads. Saalt is a certified B Corporation which means they commit 2% of revenue to donate period care to regions with the most need, and help fund initiatives in menstrual health, education, and sustainability.
I think one of the first hurdles is choosing the correct cup size as each brand has different options. Saalt has a handy size guide which I found informative in comparison to others. I chose 'Regular Soft' and with hindsight I think small would have been the better option. When placed side by side the Regular Saalt menstrual cup is much larger than the one I have been using for past two years. The cup softness provides flexibility something I am used to as it feels identical my other cup. I want to be honest in my reviews and the regular size isn't comfortable so I was unable to put it to full use.
It is not my intention to discourage anyone from giving period cups a try because they can make a difference to period wellbeing. The reduction in plastic waste and monthly costs is beneficial in the long term. You will often see the claim that period cups can be worn for up to 12 hour. Speaking as someone who experiences heavy periods, I have never been able to substantiate the claim. I do need to empty my cup during the day. However I am able to achieve a longer wear time compared to tampons so there is some benefit. Personally I don't like to wear it overnight but it OK to use a menstrual cup whilst sleeping. There can be issues associated to wearing pads and tampons for more than 8 hours.
I would be happy to recommend Saalt period cups and suggest that you visit their website for further information - www.saaltco.uk

Everyone has a lot on their minds and you might be struggling with sleeping just as I am. There are many suggestions for sleep aids but I've always been a fan of pillow mists. On the whole my allergic self can tolerate them in my room and on my bed linen. Aromatherapy is a holistic approach to soothing the mind, body and spirit. Essential oils are used for many different ailments and a pillow mist may help ease stress, agitation and anxiety. No one can promise a miracle but it's worth a trying a pillow mist for yourself.

Am I right in thinking everyone loves facial oils and serums? I personally can't be without them as they make such a difference to my dry and sensitive skin. Plant oils are a rich source of antioxidants and replenishing emollients so if you ever find your moisturiser isn't doing enough for you then it's worth adding oils into your routine. With this in mind I've decided to cover two "new to me" brands who specialise in luxury oils and serums. Both are targeting very different customer needs and I believe they will be of interest to my readers.

In an effort to stay busy during lockdown, I've had a few brands reach out to me and I've uncovered hidden gems which I didn't know about before. Today I'd like to introduce you to Seekology and here is an interview with the founder Rebecca, I hope you enjoy reading!
Tell me a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to start your store and website, Seekology?
Tell me a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to start your store and website, Seekology?
I worked in retail for many years, including as the John Lewis Beauty Buyer. I was increasingly seeing amazing, innovative independent brands springing up with no outlet to reach customers, and at the same time real customer appetite to shop from small businesses. Hence the idea for Seekology was born, and I opened my first store in Richmond in November 2019. Over the four months this pop up was open we featured 70 independent, British brands, all with amazing stories to tell, from solid shampoo inspired by the desire to reduce plastic waste to sustainably created activewear made from recycled plastic bottles. Of course, we are only selling online these days, at www.seekology.co, but we hope to have more pop up shops in future! When I'm not working on Seekology I'm looking after my two young children and occasionally playing the violin.
Why is beauty & wellbeing important to you?
Why is beauty & wellbeing important to you?
I've always been drawn to the wellbeing element of beauty, and how something as simple as a delicious smelling moisturiser or scented candle can lift someone's mood. There's always something new to discover in these areas and that keeps it exciting, especially with the innovation we're currently seeing around natural and sustainable products. And what's most important to me is creating a platform that supports entrepreneurs in this vibrant and innovative industry so that they are able to grow and thrive.
At Seekology I'm keen that beauty & wellbeing are inclusive and I recognise that these mean different things to different people. For some customers an indulgent vegan face mask is what they need, whereas we have others that are focusing on our sports offering with beautiful yoga mats from Willow Yoga. I aim to cater to conscious consumers that are interested in a more sustainable lifestyle, without compromising on style.
What five words best describe your brand?
Honest, collaborative, kind, innovative, inspirational
What is your top beauty "must have" product?
My latest "must have" is the Rosalena rose quartz facial tool. Rosalena was one of the first brands we launched Seekology with and this product is a real stand out - our customers seemed to think so too. It's small enough to fit in an overnight washbag and when used every day it not only improves drainage and circulation in the face, it also helps create a mini wellbeing ritual inspired by the brand's mantra of "Pause, Breathe, Be".
Seekology is a marketplace, what do you look for when choosing brands to work with?
I look for brands that have unique stories - whether from the founders themselves, the provenance of ingredients or a unique angle. A good example would be Heka Aromatherapy. The founder, Naomi, came into our store for a chat and we became one of her first stockists. Her products look and smell beautiful and she has fully immersed herself in a career change from PR to aromatherapy by becoming a real expert, training with Neal's Yard. As soon as I spoke to her I knew her brand would be a success.
If a brand is interested to work with you, how can they get involved?
Please get in touch via the form on www.seekology.co, although we have had such interest we are working through a backlog of requests and we are a very small team, so we'd appreciate your patience! Be clear on what you brand stands for and why it is different to the products we already sell, as well as being ready to sell - this includes testing, packaging and distribution.
How are you coping with the current situation and how can people support indie business at this time?
It's definitely been a testing few weeks and whilst running a wellbeing business I probably haven't been practising what I preach as well as I could have done! However I'm now settling into the new way of life and trying to make time for myself every day - even if it's just using a body scrub in the shower! I would love people to support indie businesses at this difficult time. Many of the brands we represent are very new to market and their founders are unable to benefit from the various government schemes available, so they need our support. Plus, their products are truly fantastic and I would urge everyone to think carefully about where they spend their money at this time.

I'm not sure what to say really as "I hope you are well?" feels a little redundant right now. The world has been turned upside down and the anxiety levels are rising. I generally keep personal details away from this site but I wanted to say I'm still here and like many of you just trying to cope. You might not realise that outside of this blogging bubble I have a regular nine to five office job and I've now been made a furlough employee. It's very bizarre to find yourself without a daily work routine for the foreseeable future and now I'm wondering how to fill my days.
If it's OK with you I'd like to create a little sanctuary here on my blog, make it a virus free zone and I want to continue talking about skincare. I've been using the internet as my escapism and it's helping me find a few moments of peace. Never have I been more grateful for YouTube with plenty of pet and home renovating videos to keep me smiling. I'm not sure how long my motivation for blogging will last, I might steer off topic on occasions but I'd like to give it a try as I think I need my own creative outlet right now. Beauty routines have always been my escapism and I'm clutching onto that for now. Our bathrooms are the little home spa sanctuaries we can create to try and ease our minds and tensions. I stepped out of the shower this morning noticing my eczema was creeping up under my skin and I felt terribly sad as I know stress is causing it to break out.
I turned off comments at the start of the year. I hadn't had a comment in so long and it was making me a little sad however I do appreciate that habits and interactions have changed since I started this blog. Let me take this opportunity to say if you'd like to reach out about skincare or any other matters on your mind then I'm available on Email, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
So I'm sending you all my love and well wishes and lets see what tomorrow brings as one day at a time feels about right for now.

I'd like to be mindful that Mother's Day (31st March 2019) can be a difficult time for some and appreciate that I am fortunate to be able to indulge in this celebration. I have collated some gift ideas specific for Mother's Day but the brands mentioned of course offer gifts all year round for every occasion.

Sometimes a milk allergy makes it tricky to find suitable sweet treats and the dedicated free from brands tend to imitate milk or white chocolate which I've started to find too sweet. My taste buds are definitely changing with old age and in recent years I'm enjoying dark chocolate.

[I was sent the products pictured above in order to fulfill the judging role, I participated in the face wash category]
Last year I was invited to judge beauty products for the Clean Beauty Awards and the finalists have recently been announced. The Clean Beauty Awards is organized by CertClean, North America's certification for safer skincare. This year, more than 300 products from around the globe entered the Awards for consideration in 15 categories, including Face Care, Face Wash, Shampoo, Odour Care, Mascara and Lipstick.
As someone who is familiar with EU labelling regulations it was a very interesting judging experience with products from across the pond. If an international brand is sold in the EU then it must comply to our regulations but a number of products I handled didn't fall into this category (I did a little research on brands). One thing I took from the experience is the appreciation of our comprehensive labels, as someone with allergies it's particularly important. We also have stricter safety laws which I'm extremely appreciative of given that one product in my box had a questionable formulation (and I chose not to judge in it on those grounds). My judging role was enjoyable and different to other awards I've participated in. I was only asked to rate product performance so I had to set aside any other personal criteria.
Visit Clean Beauty Awards 2018 Finalists for a complete list by category. Finalists were determined by the average scores of over 80 judges around the world. The winner of each category will be announced in March/April. Among the many extraordinary brands which have been recognised as Finalists, the following brands stand out as those with two or more Finalist nominations:
100% Pure
Biossance
C2 California Clean
Chorus Supernatural
Coconut Tree
Elevé Cosmetics
HAN Skincare Cosmetics
Honey & Sage Co.
INIKA Organic
La Prétentieuse
MarieNatie
Organic Island
Plantioxidants
Soapstones Natural Skincare
Standing Stone Wellness
The winner of each category will be announced in March/April and I look forward to seeing the end results. Do you have any favourites from the list above? I'm a fan of Inika Organics.

Whenever I’ve written about finding eco-friendly period products there is always an overwhelming response from fans of menstrual cups. I even heard the mention of mooncups in Neighbours the other week. To be honest it frustrates me that a small minority of people are borderline aggressive about the choices we make with period products, no one should be ashamed about what they use each month. I’ve written about pads and somehow people seem outraged that you don’t use tampons. I appreciated that the menstrual cup is a very effective product for some people but spare a thought that not everyone feels the same and that’s OK. Our bodies, periods and lifestyles vary and it makes sense so would our product choices.

I bought this Wax + Wick candle back in April after seeing Sasha (Balanced Beauty Bristol) mention the brand in a video. Sasha certainly influenced me with her enthusiasm because I rarely buy candles. There were a number of reasons why Wax + Wick appealed to me which I want to share with you.
I love the idea of taking wine bottles and repurposing them into candles. It's not only zero waste but also adds to the uniqueness of the design. My jar isn't perfect and has a couple of raised edges (they are sanded down so not sharp). The ingredients are simply soy wax and oils (local & organic when possible) there is no palm oil, artificial or synthetic colours and they are vegan friendly. I also feel that at £18 these candles are affordable in comparison to competitors and the burn time is stated as 45 hours.
The scent collection stands out with interesting aromas, to name a few Smoked Tobacco & Salted Bourbon, Amber & Mineral and Lavender & Bay Leaf. I was certainly curious about Green Tea & Almond as a scent and whilst it wasn't as I imagine it is still beautiful but don't ask me to describe it as I wouldn't know where to start!
If you love candles and embrace recycling and repurposing then check out Wax + Wick. I've also noticed that they have added vases to the website, these are also made using wine and spirit bottles.

I've known Pure Thoughts for a very long time, in fact I think it goes back to pre-blogging days. I've featured a number of products from them over the years (many of these products have long been retired) but I was always a fan of their face masks and shea butters.
Leanna, the founder of Pure Thoughts, has entered a new chapter that has evolved once again with new branding and range. Pure Thoughts has now become 100% Vegan, they have reformulated the soaps bars making them Palm Oil free and added an aromatherapy skincare collection and soy wax meditation candles.
The new range looks stunning and whilst I am yet to place an order, I've my eye on a number of products particularly the pulse point oils. I know a number of Green Bloggers who love using charcoal soaps so you will be pleased to hear there is one in the range. I also think the new candles and bath salts would make beautiful gifts.
Pure Thoughts is a natural brand that you can trust so I highly recommend you bookmark their website for when you want to treat yourself or a love one. You may also enjoy reading their blog also found on the site.

You all know the Serenity Slumber Pillow Mist is one of my most beloved products and if you love aromatherapy products then I highly recommend Bloom Remedies. A few months back I bought the Clear Vitality Pulse Point Roll On as I was looking for a replacement for Bodhi & Birch Mint Thé Temple Balm.

Fushi are passionate about health and wellbeing, they use organic, cold pressed and unrefined oils in their products. I have been using the Passion seed Oil (Maracuja), Tamanu Oil and Carrot Oil. I find oils are great way to treat my dry skin, they can be quicker absorbing than heavy creams. I can’t vouch for the health benefits of ingredients but I'm hopeful that they are doing me some good in the long run.

I had recently discovered Veeda at Boots and then coincidentally was contacted by them. Many mainstream tampons are a blend of cotton and synthetic materials. You're basically putting into your body a product which could possibly contain dioxins from the bleaching process, pesticide and herbicide residues, synthetic chemicals, artificial fragrances, and dyes. Veeda tampons are like any other brand from the way they look to the performance but the difference is they are made with 100% natural cotton.
Veeda initially caught my attention because the range includes the choice of tampons with BPA free plastic applicator. Here's where it gets TMI......I hate those cardboard applicator, I know they are better for the environment but they are uncomfortable.
Majority of the time I favour using towels and the Veeda ones are comfortable and secure. No bunching and the wings have a good hold unlike other brands. The biofilm packaging on the Veeda towels is biodegradable and breaks down in six to twelve months. For me, regular pads are only suitable for lighter days. I find that my heavy periods are what holds me back from making the full switch to "greener" products because performance in comparison to Bodyform and Always isn't adequate. Sadly, I wasn't able to get hold of the super towels in time to include them in this review.
Overall I was very happy to use Veeda products and I would look to buy more in the future. For now, Veeda is available at Boots, Ebay, Amazon and directly through their website.

I have been taking vitamin supplements on and off over the years because I can’t escape the fact that I have food allergies and my diet lacks in certain areas. Back in December I visited a Dietitian who suggested I monitor my calcium, vitamin C and D intake as I may be lacking due to my allergy to milk, OAS to fruit and I do not eat meat.
Reviewing supplements is a bit tricky because we are all different and performance of a supplement is an individual experience. So the alternative is to explain what I look out for in a brand. I want to buy the best quality I can afford and my supplements need to be free from food allergens and suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
Viridian is the leading brand of ethical vitamins. A UK based, family owned business that is committed to pure ingredients, environmental awareness and charity donation programme. They guarantee no GMOs and additives or binders and the ingredients and products are not tested on animals. More than 40% of the range is certified organic by the Soil Association. The product range is extensive from vitamins to beauty. I normally take a high street Vegan multi vitamin but since the end of April, I have been taking the Viridian Essential Female Multi.
“Formulated specifically for the needs of the 18-39 age group. Iron contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, supports normal cognitive function, the formation of red blood cells and the immune system. B6 contributes to the regulation of hormone activity. A unique blend of high quality nutrients and botanical extracts to move beyond a basic multivitamin and support optimal health and vitality.”

One thing I will mention is the capsule size is a bit large for me, I would prefer smaller. I am someone who struggles with swallowing tablets. I have been coping okay but it takes a bit of concentration and calm thoughts (that will make sense to anyone who has the same issues). I am at the top end of the recommended age bracket for the Essential Female Multi. For reference, I noticed on the website that there is a similar supplement for ladies above this age (Woman 40+ Multi Veg Caps).
I am happy to recommend Viridian Nutrition on my blog because I like what they offer in terms of product choice and company ethos. I will also say they are one of the few brands I could find that have Vegan suitable supplements especially when it comes to Vitamin D.

Recently, I have been trialing Bloom Remedies Serenity Slumber Sleep Aid Set. I am not an insomniac but I have moments when I find it hard to switch off and my sleep pattern is affected. I am sure I am not alone in feeling this way as life can often be stressful. I believe aromatherapy products can provide comfort and relaxation when our bodies go a little haywire. It may be the essential oils reducing symptoms or the simply the process of taking time out.
Bloom Remedies sleep set contains a pulse point roll on and pillow mist. The blend of essential oils in these products is Ylang Ylang, Geranium, Sweet Orange, Cedarwood, Lavender and Patchouli. I have been gravitating towards the pillow mist more than the roll on. I enjoy spritzing on bedding before getting into bed or simply using to freshen up my room during the day. I was pleasantly surprised by the scent as I normally dislike Ylang Ylang but the combination with other oils seems to be working for me. The pulse point roll can easily be slipped into your handbag and applied on the go for times when you are feeling overwhelmed. It could come in handy whilst battling your way around the shops if you are doing some last minute Christmas shopping. I obviously can’t guarantee results but it could be worth a try.
Personally, I think Bloom Remedies have a wonderful range of gift sets which out shine other natural and organic brands. I am more than happy to recommend the Serenity Slumber Sleep Aid Set. It is ideal for everyone and definitely worth considering this Christmas, especially if you know someone who finds the Festive Season stressful.

Back in October I introduced readers to TOTM (Time of the Month) organic cotton pads. As promised, I am back with a review. I received two TOTM Ultra Thin Day Pads and two Ultra Thin Night pads (both products have wings). For a point of reference, the products I normally use are Bodyform (Ultra Long Wings) and Always Night.

I received two TOTM Ultra Thin Day Pads and two Ultra Thin Night pads (both products have wings). For a point of reference, the products I normally use are Bodyform (Ultra Long Wings) and Always Night.
I have to be totally honest, due to the fact that I experience heavy periods, TOTM pads didn't always perform as I wish. I ended up using the night pad during the day as I preferred the extra length it provided. As I sat down to write this review I studied every inch of the pad. Sadly I came to the conclusion that Bodyform is offering me marginally better protection when it comes to preventing leaks. The shape of TOTM in comparison to mainstream brands is rectangular with ridges whereas others are smooth with shaping and markings to the top layer of the pad.
TOTM pads are soft to the touch and similar in thickness to high street products. Whilst using the pad I noted that the adhesive was sufficient to keep it in place, an important factor for me since I have used other organic brands which have let me down. In principal, I would happily ditch mainstream for TOTM. I appreciate the differences. They are better for the environment and my body because they lack "harsh" ingredients (chlorine, perfumes, dioxin) found in mainstream brands. I have previously, tried Natracare and I would recommend TOTM over those.
